PVR rental was 15 a month HD box was 10 so I am guessing didgital would be 5 or so? But I am sure you can talk them into giving you one. I had telus offering me 150 dollar credit which I could use to buy a HD box.

We get something like that, our tv with the hd box only went up to 22, but our tv that just plugged into the wall went to like 50. I think it has siomething to do with the way they filter channels, anyways, I asked for channel 30 once and they unlocked all the channels for me since channel 30 used to part of tier one and they couldn't separate 30 from the rest of the channels. That was about 4 years ago though.

Just got off the phone with Shaw as I'm moving into a new place on Saturday.
Got a half price 1TB HD PVR.
Fully Loaded TV and 'High Speed' wireless for $95 +GST.
Works for me.

Fotze is right. What are your measurements? I want to knit you a sweater.
Did you build your new place or did you by a second hand home? Shaw has some packages for homes that are brand new.

Gotcha, well the guns are massive, think of Hulk Hogan in his prime but with more hair...
No, I'm just moving into a new apartment. Unfortunately what I was doing before meant that I didnt own anything and the Shaw account wasnt under my own name or anything so I'm a new customer who doesnt own the PVR or modem.

Sounds like the same issue. They gave us the same answer about "how they filter channels" and claimed we weren't paying for these channels.
I just don't believe that they gave 80 channels to everybody who signed up for basic cable because "they couldn't filter it properly" 10 years ago.
Unfortunately we only got a box a year ago so requesting something above 22 doesn't fly anymore because they can deny deny deny.

Even better, if you signed up for Shaw @ Home internet in the late 90's; you had access to unfiltered full cable for free! It was well known to the point that one Internet installer pointed out the splitter he put in. He said he knew the second he left I was going to hook up my TV; so he figured he's at least make it a good split.

Called into tonight after much procrastinating, I currently have Shaw Extreme Internet and the full Digital cable, and HD Plus, pay about 140
I now have the following, basically the same thing but I did have to move to Shaw phone.
- 84.95 for a year, 160 plus GST after one year
- Unlimited long distance Canada and US for one year
- Full Digital cable, minus Movie Central
- extreme Internet
- HD Plus
- One year free PVR rental, model is mpeg4 compatible, after one year, will turn into a rental fee for the pvr unless we call in and get it changed
So yeah, nothing special, but nice to save a few bucks.

Unfortunately the Telus install didn't go as planned. I was one of the people on a profile where I can only get 1 HD stream, 2 SD, so I had to cancel. Shaw offered me a great deal so I'm now with them. What a whirlwind. Anyway, the product was fantastic when we had it - aside from that one problem.
Would love to speak with any Telus installers (or employees who can help, or even posters who 'know a person') about the issue. Is there anything that can be done to fix this problem? If we can get something worked out where I get the 2 HD profile, I'd gladly sign back up for Telus Optik TV.

to those with telus optik and who've had either shaw or bell HD... how does the HD compare? Is it the same high qual or look a little "drab" in comparison?

Its amazing to read about Shaw drop their price. I currently paying $160/month for my TV/internet/phone with Shaw. I'll be calling Telus and Shaw on Monday to see "what is the best they can do for me".

Just got a telemarketing call from Shaw today.
Long story short:
Home Phone
Internet Extreme or whatever it is called but up to 15 mbs d/l I just tested at about 12.5 (was less than 5 on regular internet)
New HD PVR and all channels
All for about $84 per month and no contract.
I was considering telus but the contract and my concerns about quality and reliability of the tv and internet swung me to Shaw.

So inspired by this thread I called Shaw to see if they can restructure my bill. All I had to do is mention the $84.95 deal and was immediately offered it. I'm pretty pleased as my bill before was $102 for Regular internet and digital cable. Now I have Home phone with free long distance in US and Canada for 1 year. Extreme Internet, New Motorola HDPVR, I mentioned that I was interested in purchasing the CI package to insure they would send me the new one and all the HD channels minus the 3 movie channels that Shaw offers. Needless to say I am happy as no contract had to be signed and after the year I can just go back to my old plan or whatever they are offering at the time.
Thanks CP.
One quick question to someone who already has been sent there PVR. I forgot to ask the size of the HD. I believe it is 500gb but I do not want to wait on hold for another 20 minutes to find out. Can any one confirm this?

Depending on the model, you can probably look through the top venting slats and see the hard drive size on the label.

It's 500 GB. It also spins constantly, which is annoying. They don't have standard screws on the back, otherwise I'd have already tried to replace mine with a spare 1 TB drive--they're some kind of crazy lock-tight torx crap which need a micro-wrench or something.

I find the HD better then Shaw... I haven't seen Bell so I can't compare, but I find Shaw a little bit grainier, Optik seems so have brighter colors IMO

Is Optik all MPEG-4? It should be, since it's relatively new.
Shaw could theoretically do the same thing as Telus (i.e. IPTV, or whatever they're doing), just over coax. I think they'd have a much easier time getting multiple high-quality HD streams if they were to blow away all the old channels taking up space and just stream people what they watching. It wouldn't surprise me if that were in the works, but I suspect it'll take years for them to get the infrastructure in place for a massive rollout.
Ideally, they could take the Shaw-On-Demand concept and extend it to all content, making them like some sort of uber Netflix. At that point, the broadcast schedule of TV no longer matters, you just start watching whatever you want whenever you want (old episode or new), provided it's aired already (or is in-progress, as with sporting events). I somehow doubt the content providers would allow for such large-scale time-shifting, but I like the idea.
