To say singing without live instruments isn't music, is the same as saying instruments without singing isn't music. Both vocals and instrumentals are elements of music, and don't both necessarily have be there to have "music".

Yeah, I guess it really depends on what you consider music. Banging on a table can be musical as can playing guitar, singing opera, rhyming, and so on .
To me music would have to include a few things: a sound you can hear, a beat, a rythym, cadence. All of which could be from a variety of sources including the voice, instruments, or other inanimate objects.

I certainly do....he is a singer. Maybe he arranges stuff on a piano somewhere, I dont know.
I guess what i am getting at is if I go to see a "group" or an "act", and i dont see instruments on the stage being played while the singing/talking is going on, then i wonder where the musicality comes in.

All you need to make music is a succession of tones and/or beats. It really doesn't matter what creates the noise.

Listen, I understand your standard internet discussion is wrought with ignorance, but this is getting ridiculous. Driveway nailed it (other than his last statement). Arguments based on stereotypes formed from mainstream music is probably the least productive way to go. There is so much good stuff across so many genres that it boggles my mind that people are willing to shut out complete genres because of their own ignorance. I suppose it's nothing lost, as they can continue to shuffle through the same 200 songs on their ipod. Ignorance is bliss, and all that.

Amazing how easy some people think it is to make music on a "computer". Go ahead and try. You'll be amazed at the talent hip hop and electronica producers have. It's a different talent than a musician hacking away on their instrument to come up with music, and one that is just as valid. If it's so easy to make millions throwing tracks off your laptop everyone would be doing it.
