If they want to end the strike early they should find the addresses for every union member and start dumping their garbage on their lawns.

The city is not going to cave on this at all.

Sometimes I think Ronald Reagan had the right idea.

Breaking the Air Traffic Controllers was one of the good things that he did while in office.Toronto is getting ridiculous to the point where this is becoming a public health hazard.

Oh my goodness, it already is...

I kind of like that garbage is overrunning the streets of Toronto, seems fitting. News alert: Brian Burke effective July 1st has started to put a lot of trash into the leafs locker room. Luke Schenn to demand a trade.

From the article that Resolute linked to:
Quote:
Ferguson said if residents are unhappy with the state of their parks, they should urge their councillors to direct city staff to end the strike.
To me that sums up how out of touch this union is. They are making the assumption that the citizens are on their side; when calling citizens scabs for cleaning up their own parks just serves to alienate the general public from their cause.

Reminds me of the Transit strike here in 2001. The city started offerring a shuttle service from Stampede into downtown, and the striking transit workers were filling up the buses and riding them all day. All they managed to do was turn a lot of people against the union.

There are 3 pages of comments on that article and only 1 single comment supports the union position. You'd think it would be obvious that the tactics chosen are failing, but apparently these guys have their heads buried in each others behinds.

Especially given the Star is basically the official newspaper of the communist party. Their readership is typically predisposed to supporting unions.

Ya, there are a lot of 'I usually support unions but you guys are being idiots' type responses.

I've never worked under a union, and I'm not familiar with Canadian labor laws, but just how difficult would it be for the membership to stage some sort of a coup? From a practical standpoint is that something that is even possible?

No different than the NHLPA, really. In theory, union leaders work for the members. When the leaders lose the trust of the members, they can replace them. Problem is, unions by nature create an environment of fear and intimidation within the ranks. Nobody is going to have the courage to step up and call for a change unless they know they have enough support to make it happen. You don't want to be alone on such a coup.

I'm flying into Toronto at the end of July... do you think I'll really notice that the garbage workers are on strike? <sarcasm>
