Anyone go to a burger joint called Fuddruckers on McLeod? I think it turned into Jack Astor's or something. Used to have awesoem burgers.
|
Yeah. I think they still have one in Regina, maybe even in Edmonton. Going to Regina feels like going back into time sometimes. They also have "Bonanza" out there still.

Well as we all know, time in Saskatchewan stands embarrassingly still. Very little progression compared to modern society.

I grew up in Sunnyside from 7 on.Still live here although I haved lived all over town.
I remember,...
*No fake rocks on the banks of the river. No pathway system.
No steps up hills.Clay caves on the hill.
The river flooding every now and then.No pedestrian bridges.
*Trolley buses.
*Corner grocery stores every couple of blocks just about everywhere.
*Buffalo Baseball Park in Eau Claire.
*Crystal Skating Rink at 4th Ave and 9 to 10th St SW
*The T intersection at 10th St and Kensington Road -the super book store
that was mentioned, with the Rifle Range under it.sw corner.
A service station across the st,nw corner.
All these next buildings are still there in a different form.
And a grocery store at the T with spinning stools behind a long counter
magazines at your back.Royal Bank at end of block,a drug store beside it.
Going North, beside the Lido, still there amazingly (Jimmy Page was there),
was the Army and Navy (a buck a case for Lubbe Lube, cheap car oil)
At second ave and 10th St was a few houses and the Moose,Saturday night dancing.
And Walt Healy's bike shop and Ridley's where I bought my first bike. B of M,
Later Snoopy's hamburger's.
North up tenth was McGavin's bakery,employed a hundred I bet.And a big church.
Across the street was another service station.Behind it was the Wellington Terrace,
still there, rented a two bedroom for $45 a month. And all that was across from a little
Safeway that had a whole block as a parking lot. Salt Peter bomb field.
At Fifth Avenue Tenth Street, presently FATS and a liquor store was a POP bottling plant,
then a Mac's and Krono's pizza.Great veal cutlets,greek pizza.He is in Kelowna now.I think
*Ye Olde Pizza Joint on 16 Ave and 9th St.
*Bowling Alley where the Brick is now.
Boy oh boy I have seen a lot of houses, buildings and businesses torn down in my little bit of Calgary.
Drive-in theatres,auto-body shops,service stations,banks,theatres,
Downtown....Macleod Trail.
Don't get me started on the drinking establishments!!!!!!!!

Not so long ago, government liquor stores.
11-12 years ago, if it was a Sunday after 6 pm, it was dial a bottle or the Carrige House off license for the guy that booted for us.
Where were the government liquor stores?
Southcentre (entrance where Sportchek now is), before moving to (then into) Willowpark.
Thought there was one in Deer Valley. And Southland across from Southland Lesuire Centre. And I remember the beer store by the Brewery off 9th Ave (with the rollers).

Brewery stores - North Hill Shopping Centre . You drove up to it at the end where Safeway is, Loblaws then. later where an eye clinic or back clinic is now.
But they were in all the spots where there are huge Liquor Stores now.
Like the Beacon or Willow Park ,17 Ave and 4 Ave although it is small now.

Ah, the good ol liquor stores with the rollers.
Does anyone remember a particular liquor store that had a spiral staircase and then a wine cellar that was almost like a dungeon, with a huge selection of wines? I remember it from the 80's, and I can still see it in my mind, but I just don't know where it is/was.

Oh yeah the ALCB in Southcentre. I forgot all about that. Across the hall there was a Safeway which became theatres which became other stuff which turned into the current Indigo book store.
There was a " Journey" video game at that Safeway.
Not just a lame old game called Journey but a game dedicated to the band Journey. One level was a thing where you were the drummer and you pounded the drums and that fired lasers to kill the spaceships that were coming for blood.
Oh Sherry that was a bad game!

Wasn't that Beerland? I believe it's still there (right beside the Cecil). I used to buy 2 bottles of Big Bear from them in high school before going to parties.

There was an ALBC in Transcanada mall when Kmart was there. And also another ALCB on 17th Ave S.E. beside CO-OP, where the old A&W Drive In was.

I remember going to hardware stores with my Dad when I was little. There was something really cool about going into a store that was 100% dedicated to real hardware stuff. No wall paper. No paint. No lawnmowers or patio umbrellas. Just sheets of plywood, 2X4's and giant bins full of every assortment of nails imaginable.
When you walked in all you could smell was wood. Beautiful smell. Once in a while I go into a store like Windsor Plywood or The Cedar Store and the memories all come back but somehow its not the same.
There was a Crown Zellarback store down in the beltline somewhere that' long since closed....none of these big box stores (no matter how convenient) will ever give my kids those same kind of memories.
Does it matter? I think so.

Ugh, I can't take much more of this thread, its hard for those of us that have left calgary to read it. I lived in calgary until the spring of 1993, we lived out NW out in Dalhousie. I always remember being excited to go to calaway park in the summer or doing ski lessons through our elementry school @ COP.
The weird thing about moving to Oregon is there is a sportscaster in the area named Ed Whalen (he was on when we moved here and is actually still on). No resemblance to calgary's Ed Whalen though, Portland's Ed Whalen is a black guy (really nice, I've met him in person too).
Does anyone remember when the Zellers (or maybe it was called woodwards) in the northland mall had its roof collapse during a bad lightning storm?

I remember the North Hill Cinema and the Fairview Bowling Alley....I lived right in the area, and it was a damn treat to have those in the neighborhood. Now we have franchises there instead, and rather than putting a movie theatre in on the location like they should have, they put a Home Depot instead. It's not a bad thing really, but I'd have preferred to see a theatre go up there.

The last remaining Mother's Pizza was in Bedding Town Centre. It was around as late as oooooh 5 years ago I think. My folks live up there so I would still have it occasionally (take out only though)
|
This Mothers Pizza moved when they started doing renovations on Beddington Mall. They are now located in Country Hills just off Harvest Hills Blvd. It's the only Mothers left I believe.

Yeah I worked there when it closed. Fun place for sure. [/b][/quote]
Best thing about Fuddruckers...writing your name down and waiting.....
"IP Freely, your burger is ready". Ensuing cackles from high school students as they went to retrieve their food.
One other burger place I do remember was Bob's burgers. And working in Chi Chi's kitchen for a couple of months. I was fired because I failed to show up for a shift cos' there was this party I really wanted to go to....
My god, whatever happened to that spirit?

Skunks. In Parkland we had tonnes of skunks.
Skunks under the school which led to evacuations.
Skunks in the back yard which made my wiener dog flip out (embarrassing to admit I had a wiener dog).
I was indifferent to them until one day we were outside and someone in the neighbourhood fired off a .22 and killed one. Totally out of line. But I couldn't help feeling bad for the unloved little critters.

Believe it or not there is still a Bob's in Calgary. It is out on the far end of Glenmore Trail - in the mini-mall next to The Glenmore Inn. So if you have a hankering for a Bob's Burger there ya go!
