Nemisz will be 19 1/2 at the start of next season, so he will be in the OHL
The only prospects likely to turn pro next season : Aulie, Backlund, and Negrin - Aulie and Negrin will both have played 4 years jr and will be 20+ yr olds - they'll be in QC
Grantham and Spratt both need to be signed. Grantham is in his overage year, and can't play another yr in the CHL; Spratt's in his last yr of college and will need to be signed following his school yr
All other prospects are 19 year old jrs or sophomores in college

In terms of players to watch, they have had plenty down there over the past season and a half. Nystrom, Boyd, Pelech, Pardy, McElhinney, Irving, Chucko.. but as you can tell most of those are in the defensive category.
Nemisz will be back in the OHL next season though for his 19 year old season, he was only drafted last summer.. and yeah... I think he's a gooder.

I dont see Spratt being signed, Grantham maybe? Spratt has never put up any decent numbers. Nemisz will be 19 and completed 3 years of junior, wouldn't he able to play in the AHL?

The FAN interviewed Ryan McGill yesterday and I caught the part about Irving. He said that after a slow start Leland has picked his game up and is the perhaps the brightest spot on the team thus far.
He also praised Chucko saying every year he does everything they ask of him.

i'd be amazed if they didn't sign Grantham. At the draft, Tod Button said they were targetting a tough guy/goon because it was a hole in the organizations prospects that needed to be filled

Why would Grantham need to be signed? Must be some sort of new rule I'm unaware of. Grantham was drafted last draft and therefore we should have two years to sign him should we not?

I'm not certain. I imagine we retain his rights for another year, but he's 21, so if he's not signed, where does he play? More logistics than rules

Just a heads up Backlund, Grantham and Bouma will be playing tomorrow night on Shaw as the Rockets take on the Giants. Also on Thursday night Nemisz and the Spitfires will be playing Sudbury on Sportsnet. Rare chance to see our prospects televised.

We get almost all the Spitfires games here on our local cable channel, so I try to catch one game a week at least. Will try to remember tomorrow night.
You guys should also keep your eye on Taylor Hall, he's great to watch!!

A little write up from the Province on Backlund's new home in Kelowna. And some comments from Bouma (check out who Bouma's line mates are...says something)
Backlund thought about coming to the WHL last year....
Quote:
Backlund, who was also a first-round pick, 24th overall, of the Flames in the NHL entry draft that year, began studying up on the WHL after that.
"I started reading about the league and how it works and I was getting more and more interested," said Backlund, a 6-foot, 200-pounder who has one assist in his first three Rocket games.
"Last year, I was thinking about coming, but I felt comfortable at home. This year, things didn't work out as I thought they would, so I felt it was the perfect opportunity."
|
Bouma on Backlund....
Quote:
"He's a very skilled, fast player," said Bouma, who was skating on Vancouver's top line at practice Tuesday, lining up with Casey Pierro-Zabotel and Evander Kane. "He's very offensive, but he's also very good on the defensive side of the puck, too. You have to always been aware when he's out on the ice."

To me that says two things: - Bouma's offensive upside is minimal
- Bouma is a good enough player to be the defensive conscience on the Giants' top line.

I don't see it necessarily as the defensive conscience. I think this is more about Bouma having the make-up to get the puck out of the rough areas (corners, boards) and get it to the other two. Then go to the net, make it tough on the opposing goalie and defense and pick up any left overs. Oh ya....and if someone looks at his linemates the wrong way then he lays a beat down. Similar role to Lucic on Boston.

Stop with the annoying posts man.
Good discussion about Buoma, but we should move to do it's own thread, as this is basically just for quick updates etc.
