Ok, I hate goalie uniforms that dont give you any clue as to who the player plays for... is Ricardo Dutch or Portugese?

Do all those delays during the bookings count for injury time? If so, injury time is going to be very, very long.

Merry Christmas to the English squad.
The Dutch (or the Russian ref) helped them out in a huge way.....red cards, a zillion yellows, and Figo should be suspended for the head-butt.
Craziest soccer game I've ever seen......can't believe the Dutch lost.

What a total farce this game turned into. Disgusting.
Surprised that van Nistelrooy wasn't put in when they were playing 10 on 9...

That should have been an immediate red card. Can they investigate and suspend after the fact?
England now faces a Portugese squad with at least two suspensions to starting players due to red cards and an injured star forward. Should be interesting, and gives England their best chance yet to make it to the semi-finals.
I'm going to go and cry in my beer now.

That was the most utterly insane soccer game I've perhaps ever seen. I wonder how long it will be until we hear about Figo and his impending suspension?
Oh well, go England!

I wouldn't be surprised to see Figo suspended for the England game.

Yes, they can.
And yes, he should have been tossed when it happened......perfect example of what haapens when a ref lets the game get out of control. What a debacle.

Was that the play where the referee had his back turned?
Has FIFA ever considered giving alternate officials - like the linesmen - the ability to inform the referee of such events if he misses them? Seems that one referee cannot possibly see everything that happens on a football field with 22 players on it.

yes it is. There are 2 guys with the exact same name in the Dutch league so they put Vennegoor of <town he was born> on the back of the jersey.

the assistant refs can now call the ref over and tell him what happened. They changed it to give them that power 2 years ago iirc.

Strange thing on that play was that he only got a yellow. You would think that he would have been red carded ASAP.

The craziest thing I have ever seen. Obviously I am thrilled for the win, but I guarantee Figo gets suspended, Deco is gone, and Ronaldo may be unfit(that high tackle was a red card offence for sure)......So Portugal could be out their top 3 attacking midfield players, OOOUUCCHHH......And no Costinha either, he can be replaced by Petit though, and I think Petit is a better fir anyways. I am not looking forward to the England game though, I hate the English(sorry guys) and I can't see Portugal winning despite the fact that England looked like crap this morning.
the game itself was a debacle that was started by the Dutch. There was a play where the ref blew the whistle so that a Portguese player can be attended due to a injury. The ref blew the whistle, gave a drop ball, Figo backed away to let the Dutch guy kick the ball to the Portuguese, but instead of doing that, he just went on a run with the ball, then Deco decided to haul him down and gave a vicous tackle and was rightfully so carded for that. Yes, there was some skirmishes before that, but the game lost any control that it had on that play. The Dutch should be ashamed of that play.
All in all, the game and the reffing was brutal both ways, so KFF, you can't blame this game on the refs, because it wasnt one sided and for christs sakes, you were up a man on two different occasions, meaning you should have been able to tie it up then.
FORCA PORTUGAL.........this game will be talked about for a long time.

I'm glad that Portugal won but I cannot believe that the game got as violent and stupid as it did. Figo's head butt go things underway and I think he's lucky to have only gotten a yellow. If the board of officials and Fifa decide that Figo should be suspended for the game against England I think that few will be surprised. Of all the players to loose control you would not expect the captain to be the first to do so. Some of the tactics and fouls by the Dutch players were deserving of more than yellow cards and I felt that in that regard the official was too lenient to the Dutch side.
England must be happy today going into the quarterfinal match against Portugal with some of their key players suspended and C. Ronaldo's possible injury. I'm sure that C. Ronaldo will play and his substitution today was more preventative than anything, or at least that's what I hope.
Of course with the Portugese suspensions most would think that England has the advantage, and on paper that's the way it seems, but England has been too inconsistent to be able to predict how they will fare in the quarterfinal. The pressure is on England now more so than Portugal.

Yep, the pressure is on England and this will be the third straigh clash between Scolari and Erricson in a QF of a major tournament. Should make for an interesting storyline. If Figo and Crisitano are out along with Deco and Costinha, 4 of today's 5 starting midfielders will be out leaving a midfield that will consist of Maniche and Petit on the back of mid with Tiago, Simao and Boa Morte or Hugo Viana as the Offensive midfielders. Not looking good for the pork chops. Gonna be a long week of work for me and I hope we hear about Figo's future sooner rather than later.

Hey......I agree with you. The Dutch should have won, no doubt about it. Even in the first half they had a big advantage in ball posession, but weren't doing much with it offensively. They had more than their fair chances in the 2nd and just couldn't get it done.
I was saying the ref was terrible......both ways. But how do you miss a head butt? He definitely let the game get out of control.
Anyways, kinda wish Van Nistelroy had at least a chance late in the game to come in and do something. At least they have quite a few young guys coming up.......should have a decent squad next WC.

IIRC, I think the ref was turned the other way dealing with another altercation, so I think it's fair that he missed that. But you are, he let the game get out of control, it's a shame, because the game could have been a beauty too.

England has been the luckiest team in the tournament by far. How many real teams have they played against? They barely eek by Ecuador and will now face Portugal B squad. Ugh, I either way, they will be absolutely run over in the semis.
