Regarding Kyrou, Andersson, and Rossi, I get why Buffalo didn't want to consider them. They actually have decent offense and and needed a defenseman, especially one on the right to play with Power. They probably think they can easily re-sign Kesserling, which they might not be able to for say Andersson.

Reading some comments from Sabres fans, most really hate the trade, but some are finding some solace in getting an RD back with potential top 4 upside. Some of them seem OK to lose on trade value because it at least addresses a need.

I think some people are probably on to something about the potential RFA offer sheet angle. They didn't want futures at all, so likely felt pressure to pull the trigger and not hold out for more.

Why does it always have to be for the top asset available,?

Does somebody like Zary really have substantially more value than Doan...probably not... probably similar values.

Bahl and Zary is probably a similar package from the Flames.
On the flipside and for perspective, what would the opposite be... Kesserling and Doan for Coronato plus?

No, not at all. When you factor in a historically high shooting percentage for a player that only offers offense and is now set to likely regress quite a bit from that percentage and gets paid nearly $8mil a year? Yes, Buffalo sucks at building and trading, but he was being shopped and other GM's likely wanted a deal in place for Peterka and balked at the contract demands + assets to acquire. Buffalo did alright here, imo.

I also like this trade for Buffalo. They're getting a top 4 rhd, could play top pair with Dahlin next year, at worst he's with Owen Power. Chance for chemistry.

But the Doan kid is the one who I think they were targeting in this. Yeah, he's barely an NHLer. But if (and it's a fairly big IF) he has the determination to play for whatever club has him, and he shows the same drive that his dad did...

They want an Adam Lowry of their own. Someone who plays right, doesn't shirk the details. And can, maybe, eventually, maybe even lead that squalid squad. And for what it's worth, I don't think that's a bad strategy.
