I don't really like this trade for any of the teams except Carolina. Avs take them self out of contention, Chicago gets almost nothing, Carolina is probably cup favorites now

Why would anyone think he'll sign for cheap?

Clearly COL thinks he is holding firm on his very high demands - if they thought he might 'sign for cheap', this trade isn't happening.

Avs have 13.841m (puckpedia) in cap space to use to build up. They're not done, not by a long shot. If they're not getting Sid they'll blow their wad elsewhere. This trade is just setting the table for their load up.

Carolina has some of the best management in the league imo. I think they'll lock rantanen down to play with aho long term.

They could use a bit more stability in net.

With Orlov coming off the books next season they may be able to afford him. But that D is going to start looking mighty thin.

Yep. This is exactly how you run a team. Thanks for your service, good luck on your retirement contract. This guy is turning 29 by next season's opening night and I'd bet wants a raise in percentage of cap. Does anyone think the best is yet to come or has already occurred?

Carolina has a lot of money coming off the books this summer, and the salary cup may be going up a lot. I think they could keep him.

Nikishin is likely coming over.

Considering Hall is now with the Canes, unlikely.

I don’t care what anyone says. Treliving and the process were in on this.

Depending on where the salary cap is next year the Hurricanes will have about 40 million in cap space to sign a goalie, 3 dmen and 5 forwards. They have a starting goalie they need to sign and no RFAs to sign. They have more than enough cap room to sign Rantanen. They have almost ultimate cap flexibility, most of their main pieces are signed longterm for relatively affordable cap hits.

Hope so. Want Colorado as strong as it can be to stop the oilers in the playoffs.

I highly doubt it would happen but Crosby to Colorado would be the biggest trade in decades. Maybe not in total return but in significance as a league.

If you think Eric Tulsky is going to give Rantanen Draisaitl money, either you're crazy, or I've supremely overestimated Eric Tulsky.

We will see if Carolina actually ponies up to re-sign Rantanen. They have a reputation of trying to squeeze players on contracts.

Rantanen appears to be looking for the bag.
