St. Louis? ROR was their top scorer with 77 points (a career high). Tarasenko, Perron, Pietrangelo were good but not what I'd call superstars. And they rode a very hot rookie goalie.

Terrific ATL. Great Ranger fans, and even CP got a shoutout in the big city.
There needs to be a word that describes a Flames win and an Oilers loss on the same day, but I'm not creative enough.

Stick taps for the refs getting the hand deflection call right. We've had a few of those go against us in recent seasons.

I'm honestly not sure it was right.
Huberdeau made a deliberate attempt to play the puck with an open hand, and it led to an advantage for the Flames.
Quote:
79.1 Hand Pass - A player shall be permitted to stop or “bat” a puck in the air with his open hand, or push it along the ice with his hand, and the play shall not be stopped unless, in the opinion of the on-ice officials, he has directed the puck to a teammate, or has allowed his team to gain an advantage, and subsequently possession and control of the puck is obtained by a player of the offending team, either directly or deflected off any player or official.
|
That probably should have been called back (even though it had no real immediate impact on the goal and is stupid it's even reviewable).

The way one would think, if one supposed that bad teams always lose and good teams always win. A lot of fans tend to do this and overreact to individual games, even though they have the experience to know better.
Even the worst teams win about a quarter of their games. Even the best teams lose about a quarter of theirs. Nothing is guaranteed either way.

This was one of the best games I have watched the Flames play in a long time.
They were fast, aggressive, and their stick work was excellent. No passengers this game.
Wolf, Coronato, Zary and Bahl are all taking huge steps.

That is my only concern. Don’t trade first round picks for older impact players. Don’t trade second or third round picks for depth players. Focus on getting younger and drafting well.

I had 2 fears when it seemed inevitable that we were doing the firesale and likely drafting high:
1. We would focus too hard on the tank and end up with a culture of losing, a la Buffalo. It's nice to draft high, but it's hard to wash off the stink of not just losing, but being a loser. It's why I feel that tanking to draft high by itself is a lousy strategy and unlikely to work without a good culture and patient ownership.
2. Speaking of patient ownership, I fear either impatient owners or an impatient front office. Sometimes it seems like you settle in for a few years of drafting and development, but all of sudden you are doing well so come TDL, the GM announces the rebuild is done and now a bunch of picks and prospects are going out the front door for pricey rentals. Followed by overpriced UFA signings in the summer to chase it next year because it "just got away from us" this year.
Flames need to focus on executing the plan in it's entirety, not make a panic move. Plus, I would far rather see us pick high in 2027. Would be nice to draft a high potential prospect like Dupont considering we drafted his father.

This was one tricky. I guess ultimately they determined flames did not gain an advantage.
It’s funny because he intentionally tried to bat it, missed and it ended up being a deflection, which I think should be fine. But as we saw Laviolette demonstrate to the refs, when a guy has his hand at eye level, it’s hard to say it’s a deflection.
Quirky play indeed. I’m fine with the call either way, this one was borderline. But it makes me more pissed about the play from last year we had called back that was an awful call.

Was at the game. Observations:
- Flames positioning was amazing. When they play structured, they lead. They certainly still sometimes forget - I think the team is still in a stage where players let their mind take over.
- Zary dummied the Rangers over and over. That kid was amazing.
- Speaking of which, Coronato was also amazing. Kuz and Shesh also played really, really well. All over the ice making plays and getting shots off.
- Weegar and Andersson are hella fun to watch. Pachal, Bahl, Bean and Miro are all boringly effective. Miro is probably the worst of the bunch - he definitely loses track of where he is on the ice more often than the others.
- Wolf is soooo smooth.
- Huby. Oh man. He's forgotten how to play hockey. He has a really tough time timing zone entrances.
- Rangers D are a tire fire getting out of their own zone, other than Fox. Wow they really lean on him.
- Rangers were trying to piss off Lomberg all night.

I always love ATL's against the Rangers. My favorite from a couple years ago when they called #88 Manginapain

The Rangers' blueline has been quite bad--and extremely overrated--for quite some time, now. Basically it's just Fox, whoever plays with Fox, and a bunch of other guys.

When you have one of the best 3 goalies in the league and a #1D anchor I guess you don't feel the pressure to do any major work on the rest of the D group.
The Rags would be well served making some improvements there though.

Agreed. If the player is not 25 or younger, don’t trade picks or prospects for them. Even if the flames are destined to avoid a bottoming out rebuild ala San Jose and Chicago… they are still in the phase of the rebuild where they should try to fill in roster spots internally as much as possible. Let players like Klapka, Honzek, Brz, Poirier, and Parekh be the guys to fill roster spots when they become available rather than sign 29 year old vets that “know how to win”.
