Ok?
If he comes a problem waive him, problem solved. He’s gonna play top 9 to start the season.
Problem within the team?
Good lord.
Are you really a doctor?

I think Mantha will surprise many..unfortunately because if his size everyone thinks he should be more physical than he is...but it's just not in his DNA.
The weird part is when (if) he fights...he is a frickin menace.
Great hands and a good skater on a body that big is rare.
If motivated...he will be good for this group.

I think sometimes, the vets are just trying to get through pre-season uninjured

He does have a temper and notorious inferiority complex.

Can we just cut this guy and give his spot to whichever rookie earns it? Give Honzek a chance and if he is not ready then play Coronato.
I don't have a problem with his play given it is preseason. I just don't understand why he is on the roster, and taking up a roster spot.

Sign a guy as a UFA for $3.5M and then cut him (whatever that means-this ain't the NFL) before the season starts?
Wonderful strategy, and sure to entice UFA's to come running to Calgary.

No worries, he is good for the tank
Hopefully he can get tons of garbage points to fool people into thinking he cares again so they can get a pick at the TDL

Is Mantha the quickest player to go in the hated column of any Flames player in history?

It's a vet trying to rehab his worth in the league playing in pre-season where the games are absolutely meaningless unless you are competing for a spot on the roster (which he isn't). If anything he is trying to not pull a Laine and be taken out before he can rehab his career. If he is still mailing it I am confident in this staff that they will address it, but I sure hope he plays his way into a profitable trade at the deadline for the Flames.

He didn't sign a PTO, he was given a 1 year deal at 3.5M his spot in the lineup was pretty much guaranteed.
THe preseason for him was more getting acclimated the team and the systems. Not to go balls to the wall and get injured.

I honestly don't know what to expect out of Mantha. He has had pretty good seasons in terms of PPG (though almost always shortened), and he has had fairly mediocre seasons too. Even his best seasons were always seen as disappointing relative to expectations based on his size, skill and skating ability.
Trade history:
Detroit - Washington
Washington acquires Mantha in exchange for:
Jakub Vrana (two years younger than Mantha - #13OV in 2014 draft)
Richard Panik (Cap dump)
2021 1st round pick
2022 2nd round pick
It was a really weird trade based on a GM assuming that Mantha had untapped potential. Vrana was a higher draft pick (13th vs 20th), and was two years younger. Drafts vary of course. However, in the seasons that they were traded for one another, Vrana was out-producing Mantha slightly (same 11 goals, 14 assists vs 10, but 3 less games played). Then to add another 1st and 2nd? Panik was a salary dump, and was signed at 2.75 for an additional year beyond the season. The following season, Detroit trades Panik (50% retained) and a 2nd round pick to the Islanders for Nick Leddy who was having a decent season, so I don't think that Panik was that poor of a cap dump to necessitate a 2nd round pick being thrown into the deal from Washington to Detroit.
Washington - Vegas
Vegas acquires Mantha for:
2nd round pick in 2024
4th round pick in 2026
Mantha was having his best season at the time since arriving in Washington and having been a fairly huge disappointment, especially considering the trade package that Washington used on him. 56GP 20G 14A was his stat-line when the trade happened. Can we expect him to score more than this? I don't know.
Expectations:
I feel like if he puts up those numbers again, maybe the Flames can get a 2nd for him. It doesn't help matters much when you see that Vegas only dressed him for 3 playoff games (they played 7 in total), and he failed to produce a point (interestingly, Hanifin had a great playoffs, and was tied for 2nd in scoring with 5 pts in 7 games, behind only Eichel).
I would say that barring a significant increase in points over his best seasons, I wouldn't expect anything more than a 2nd at best. I think it would be wildly optimistic to think that he can best his career numbers now at the age of 30 enough to return a 1st, or a 2nd and a decent prospect. I am expecting a 3rd round pick back at the deadline personally, but each deadline is different, and who really knows how well he ends up performing here. I just think that given his usage in the playoffs last year, and him being a notable 'under-performer' around the league, I see him as somewhat of a depreciated asset. I am just going to temper my expectations.
It will be curious to see how well he ends up doing here. Hopefully something just clicks here for him.

He was obviously going through the motions with it being pre-season. I would probably wait until he has a handful of regular season games before grabbing the pitchforks.

He was signed to finish Huberdeau's passes and get him going. Finding a finisher that meshes with Huberdeau is to Conroy as finding a starting goalie was to Treleving.
Hopefully it doesn't take six years this time!

I believe the 1st and 2nd were not only to take on Panik's contract, but there were already reports of character issues with Vrana. Since he later ended up in the assistance program and waived multiple times, there may have been something to those rumours.

I don't mind Mantha going through the motions in pre season, but I hope the Flames don't fuss over putting him in the press box if he comes out the gate with a baby lamb.

Because you still need to ice a semi competent NHL team, and he was a free asset we acquired that we can potentially flip for more assets at the TDL?

I'm so old I remember Makarov showing up and being super meh in preseason. Because he knew the games weren't real.
