Brad Treliving is gone, remember?

That's the Ghost of Treliving's Past haunting you. Conroy has shown that he is after younger players with upside. Bollig, etc are your prototypical BT waste of cap space and a roster spot players, see Ryan Reaves and David Kampf for current examples of this behavior.

I suspect that the Flames won't spend right up to the cap, but not because Edwards is worried about saving money. I think it is just a factor of going into what looks like more or less a rebuild. They are going have a few ELCs playing up the line-up, and there is no point in loading up on expensive players if you're not going for it.
They will probably leave some room all season as well in case they can weaponize it by being a 3rd party brokering trades or getting sweeteners to take on expiring bad contracts.

Great trade.
Mangiapane was never going to get close to 30 goals again, and maybe not even 20. I like him overall, but he really wasn't that effective out there over the last two years.
But this is about asset management.
6th round pick. Develop him as a long shot, but he becomes a permanent middle six winger. Trade him at his peak age, but past what is likely to be his career highs in produciton, for a 2nd round pick to add to a rebuild.
Really, really smart upgrading of an asset.

2nd with no retention is more than I would have expected at this point. Decent gamble for the Avs, he could work out well there as well.

Pick is the avs but he’s going to Washington to play with Ovi which is also pretty cool.

Nevermind, saw it was the Avs. Conroy is doing a full tear down and is just accumulating assets.

Save the cap space and retention spots for the trade deadline. I would love to be involved in brokering all the trades and taking on bad cap/some cap hits for a premium.

These players for picks trades are fine with me.
We have a lot of picks in the top 64 this and next year.
I hope they hit a home run on a few of these late 1sts and 2nds.

If Conroy can get a late 2nd for Mangiapane without retention, what is Kuzmenko's worth? Mangiapane did have good underlying numbers but hasn't been able to regain his scoring touch. Does a potential 40 goal scored in Kuz with questionable defensive skills get the Flames more?

Good trade. I think Mangiapane has become underrated. He does a lot of heavy lifting. If he was good on the PP, his production would then make him look much more attractive of course. However, he does a lot of heavy lifting 5on5. I don't think he is vastly overpaid, but I am surprised that Conroy was able to squeeze out a 2nd without retention in this market. This is a great trade.
I wish him good luck, and I hope he scores 40 next season and really cashes-in somewhere. I think he has been a fantastic Flame and a good story to have followed.

I hope they use the cap space to pick up weaponize the cap for further picks and 1-year UFAs. And then trade those UFAs for more picks.

I’m just so happy they are fully rebuilding. This is an exciting time to be a Flames fan. There will be some muck these next few years but these trades signal a philosophical shift that I didn’t know or believe was possible.
Cannot wait to see what’s in store tomorrow.
