I wouldn’t take Kot back as the main piece, but if he were part of a package, I would do it. He’s a big C with good speed, and tons of potential, even if he’s struggling this year.

Do you like Jesperi Kotkaniemi?

Couldn't say about Kotkaniemi - I don't watch much outside of Flames and Flames-adjacent hockey. Is Merkulov (or Poitras) similar to him in your opinion?

Who are some good prospects on the canes we could get in that package?

Kotkaniemi is an atypical finn:

he's a skilled player who has another level of swag. Plays in a very structured system so the points don't shine but he projects as a 2C in this league.

We won't get a 1C in any trade except the rare Eichel trade that comes around once a decade, and Vegas won that sweepstake.
What we can hope for is a young C with 2C upside in his prime. Florida and Jersey can offer that.
Poitras is interesting to me too but hard to gage his upside at the NHL level yet.

I think he will be a 2C in this league. What he is willing to do is similar to Bennett, depending on the opportunity. In Carolina he doesn't really have that.

He's already a good player that can comfortably hold down the #3C spot on a president trophy worthy team, and has room to grow on both offense and defense. If he ends up on the Flames, it's a safe bet that he'll be Backlund v1.1, but even better at faceoffs than Backlund is.
The Flames could do a lot worse than Hanifin for Lundell on a 1:1 swap...if Hanifin is a pure rental to Florida. Personally, I think he's a way more compelling "get" than Poitras or anything that the Canes can offer.
Poitras is still young, but his WJC performance this year was really disappointing for someone playing in the NHL...there was no reason he should have been as invisible as he was.

Never said he wasn't a good player. The comment was using the old "went to the cup final" as a selling point is useless. You know who else did, Ryan Lomberg. This isn't comparing the 2 players but if Lomberg is traded is the fact he went to a cup final a selling point. No it's not. Lundell is a good young player and could improve with more icetime, but to think the Flames would trade a top 1/2 defencemen signed to an extension 1 for 1 would be a mistake.

This is from the draft where they picked JK. Habs fans weren’t happy.

Alexander Nikishin is one of the best D prospects in the league, so he would be off-limits. Ville Koivunen is a prolific scorer with skating issues, Bradly Nadeau is small with a glorious shot, Scott Morrow is an excellent offensive D, Felix Unger Sorum is a speedy RW, and Simon Forsmark is a high-scoring two-way D with size. There’s also Jayden Perron, a small RW who can put points up, but is struggling a bit to do so in college, and W Noel Gunler, who has gone back to Europe after failing to progress in the AHL.
I would love to get Morrow, personally.

You mean to tell us it's possible to build a team that's competitive every year and still maintain a prospect pipeline?

Flames scouts and development staff would have plenty of views of Suniev's teammate, Morrow
He certainly stands out on a good UMass team

Friedman says Tampa is Hanifin's top choice. If it was that easy it would have been done.

Picking up Morrow on the right side and Grudinin on the left would be a really nice get. They both project as solid all-round minute munchers. A couple of Anderssons. Add a first and you are in a good place. Grudinin has the Russian factor, as he is progressing quickly in the KHL.
There are worse ways to build a team than an over inflated D-corp. Concentrate the draft completely on high risk/high reward centres.

That sucks. Hopefully, he’s willing to re-sign with other teams so the Flames’ return isn’t limited to trading with Tampa or trading him as a rental.

If musicians like myself lived by those rules there would be no songs in this world. I don't care at all if someone dislikes my songs because I understand how personal and varied people's tastes can be. I'm not going to let a few critics dictate what I do with my art.
Play your song and don't worry about the criticism when it comes. It will always be there trying to stop you from doing the things many others will wholeheartedly appreciate.
