You only get 2 salary retentions per season don't you? I'd rather save em for Lindy and Hanifin.

He wanted out, see ya. I would have liked him to come back on a decent deal for both teams. But after his idiot agent spouted off, don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out. The picks we got back are terrible though.

3 total I think.
And yeah I actually always felt like Tanev is more likely Toronto's target and think they might retain on that move.

Not a fan of this trade, but who knows what kind of disruptions were going on in the dressing room. My hope is Kylington coming back. Probably a fools hope though.

What a surprise. People are complaining.
Never quit, CP, never quit.
It's always interesting to me that people who have zero ACTUAL knowledge or experience in a professional hockey club and how things really work always figure they know more than the people who do it for a living. Fascinating!

Was wondering when we'd get into the appeals to authority in this thread

The deal is fine as long as they use the cap space wisely. If not it's another underwhelming trade by Conroy.

Seems about a standard return for full cap relief. Would have preferred not to go to the Canucks, but when Backlund 2 weeks ago basically comes out and says guys need to shut up and play, there was a friction in the locker room that needed fixing before the deadline.

Agree with most that its very underwhelming. I think he's certainly a third pair guy, but he came of a 14 goal season last year, and there seemed to be interest out there for him. I wonder if Conroy pulled the trigger to early.
The positive new is the Flames get a little worse this season, so it indicates they may actually be thinking long term.

Important to remember that the return for Zadorov in isolation isn't all that interesting, it's the total return for all these guys.
It may be a requirement to accrue a maximum amount of cap space by the deadline to take on unwanted contracts, which makes it important to do this trade as early as possible.
And, yeah, who cares about retaining the max amount if it's for one year. It will not be an issue when it comes time to construct the next team. Buy those picks!

Was expecting a 2nd, a 3rd and 5th is equal to that.
Not mad about the return, not happy about it either.
At the end of the day, we traded a player that requested a trade and played like ass post-request. Flames did fine here.

I don't mind it, we as fans understood Zadorov's weaknesses (struggles when elevated into top 4) and maybe we feel like the rest of the NHL sees a better player because he throws a big hit here and there. They know.
Only frustrating thing is the better pick being 3 drafts away, that's brutal. That player, if he's anything will likely be making a Flames roster in 2029 at the earliest. Woof. I'm of the belief that a 2026 pick is significantly less valuable in a trade than a 2024.

I do think that at the deadline you might get a 2nd + for him.
I think that the Flames also didn't want to use one of their retention slots on Zadorov.
And for whatever reason they felt like they needed to make this move now (Cap Space, Locker Room issues, etc).
So in that sense I guess a 3rd and 5th is probably okay for what they did. But really I just don't get why there would be the urgency to do this now before more of a market opens up. He's the prototypical "Teams overpay for physicality" player that get overpayments at the deadline.

Honestly the only reason the Flames should be making this trade now is if they feel there is some need for them to open up that cap space now. Because there's really no other justification.

If you wait, the Canucks just sign Bear. Canucks probably preferred Zadorov. Said "Deal/No Deal clock ends at end of day."
