Players have been hitting skaters and goalies while skating backwards for decades. I'm old and I've seen it happen since I started watching hockey. Pretty routine stuff.
It's surprising anybody would think players have no control on where they're going or what they're doing while skating backwards. Like has been already said, Tkachuk did it regularly. He knew what he was doing every time.
