Edit - Except Suter, who I missed.
Irwin is moving positions? And Hoglander won't be 4th line if he's in.

As I said, they didn't send their best, but a bunch of them played more NHL than AHL last year.

So I'm not sure it's crazy to think 7/8 names that played for the Canucks yesterday could be on the opening day 23 man roster...even if it's all bottom 6 or bottom pairing type roles.

Hirose will be on the roster before Rathbone. Cap Friendly has four of those names on the projected starting roster depth chart. Hoglander, who has to show he can play in training camp. Won't be shocked if he gets waived. Podkolzin who will likely end up back in the AHL to keep developing. Joshua who will be on the 4th line rotation and Suter, who will be on the roster.

Edit - So in reality, probably three of those players start the season on the team not including Suter who will for sure be there. I'd bank on Joshua, Hirose and Aman.

My impression after watching last night:

Never meet your Hirose.

Even then it's not like it was a team of guys that have no shot.

There are probably 10 guys on that roster that have a chance to be on the opening day 23 man roster or the first call ups.

8. 9 if we include Silovs. They're all AHL to NHL Bubble calibre players currently.

I do recall a split squad last year where the Flames sent their version of that line up into Vancouver and held their own against the canuck regulars.

I think Vancouver's system is just extra No Good.

That is 11 names of guys that are either in a battle for an opening night roster spot, or could potentially be early call ups. Sure maybe only 4 or 5 actually end up on the opening night 23 man roster, but those are the 11 guys battling for that spot.

Now none of those guys are world beaters...but it was a lot closer to their best AHL lineup than it was their Pentiction Youngstarts tournament lineup.

well, if you want to talk CF, they have Joshua on the 3rd line, not 4th. And Podolzin on the 2nd. And Hoglander is their top line RW.

Rathbone, Raty, and Podkolzin are not going to be first call ups or even second call ups unless they're lighting the AHL on fire. Rathbone likely won't be on the team post camp.

Someone else brought it up, not me. I think it's an awful way to figure out since it's using lines from practice to generate the depth chart.

It was a joke, not an actual statement. Half the youngstars roster is back in juniors, europe, or whatever boondocks they were pulled out of for that event.

In the end that Canucks roster wasn't great but it was still a lot of players that either have played or are likely to play NHL games this year.

Rathbone, Hirose, Juulsen, McWard, Irwin, Dries, Raty, Hoglander, Studnicka, Suter, Mcdonough, Joshua, Aman, Podkolzin,

That is 14 skaters that played at least 5 NHL games last season - so even though it was no real top 6 players or top 4 dmen. There were a lot of guys that will likely be counted on as NHLers for the Canucks this year in the lineup last night and will likely be call ups at some point this season.

Interestingly enough the Flames only had 11 skaters that played 5 NHL games or more last season in the lineup last night - but of course way more of our top 6 and top 4 talent.

I think it's a silly way to structure things ... much preferred the young guys getting game one against an equivelant opposition as we saw a few years ago.

But the Flames in Seattle tonight aren't much different than what Vancouver had on the ice last night.

Only two for sure NHL players in Dube and Vladar. Other two are Coronato and Ruzicka. That's it. Not really even any other long shots.

Yeah these types of matchups tend to be the way the first 3-4 pre-season games go, and really you only see more even match ups in the final 2-3 pre-season games.

But I do challenge that it was a roster of no-chance NHLers for the Canucks.

14 of those guys played at least 5 NHL games just last season. Those players are all likely to be their bottom 6, bottom pair, NHL extras, and first callups.

The thing is, these types of preseason games happened in previous years and somehow a veteran ladden flames team would lose to this style of Canucks roster.

It was nice to see the right team crush AHLers. I feel like with Sutter here that wouldn't have happened.

That will be a good test for Vladar. Also a chance for Wolf to back up his good NHL debut with more steady play behind a mostly NHL roster.

The three headed monster in net is driving the most intrigue for me.

True, though I thought those top 6/4 guys - especially Huberdeau, Kadri, Dube, Hanifin, did their damage and then let the kids/bubble guys take over.

I don't recall seeing any of Lindholm, Sharangovich or Huberdeau at all in the third. I think the Kadri line played a single shift. They let the youngsters play.
