Shots fired....
Quote:
Jarmo Kekalainen somehow thanked Babcock for his “hard work,” which allegedly included inspecting players’ camera rolls on their phones, and “professionalism” in working with the team to step down
|
Quote:
There was no apology, no support for his players, or even a denouncement of Babcock’s alleged actions...It was a statement devoid of leadership. If the written word can elicit a smell, the Blue Jackets’ statement on Sunday reeked of defiance

So, I haven't delved into the drama. Is there anything else besides the photo and phone thing that has come to light? Interesting the vets had such a different reaction.

Or, the perfect sociopathic power play to have a cushy meeting with the vets so they say that it was all above bar.

Hopefully they are in the process of finding replacements so these two are joining Babcock.

I'm probably reading way too much into this but I can see it where those 2 are fired a month or so into the season regardless of team standing.

Interesting comment on 32 thoughts this morning. Friedman talked to an owner who said the reason he meddles in hockey ops so much is because of this.
There is some level of ownership involvement that is the right amount. It probably lies somewhere between McConnell and Mur.

It’s a black and white issue that everyone knows. Feigning naitivity and trying to protect motives is laughable.
Shame on cbs management and player leadership for not handling this.

Hold up, lets clarify your personal paid phone is this. Do not assume your work phone is the same. Its not.
I know you probably did not mean this, but man the things I have seen people try and do on and with company property.

Kind of a weak statement from owners. No mention of ensuring a good culture for the players and staff. Just that they expect a good season and a "don't make me have to" tone. Weird.
Wonder if they feel this is a witch hunt and Babs didn't do anything that bad?

This has to be one of the weirdest situations I have seen in all the years I have watched the league.

Jarmo has always seemed like one of the most arrogant guys in the NHL. Cut from the same cloth as Babcock. No surprise he hired him, no surprise he refuses to take any real responsibility for the blunder.
The NHL is slowly shuffling everyone who thinks he is the smartest guy in the room out of the room, and Jarmo will be next.
JD is harder to figure out. He seems like one of the good ones. He's sharp at knowing what he doesn't know, reading the room, working collaboratively, building strong organizational culture. But for whatever reason, he just can't quit Jarmo, and it may bring him down.

I obviously don't know what happened, but in a power dynamic like that I don't think it's unreasonable for some players to say they didn't have a problem with it when in fact they may have. Babcock is a known tyrant... is it a wise career decision to jump into a media interview and call him out publicly? What if he doesn't get fired? You're dead.

Babcock has shown himself to be a master manipulator of people. He takes advantage of people and uses his power to threaten and intimidate people into doing things they wouldn't otherwise do.
The vets who spoke up for Babcock could very much be in the manipulated group.

You may be right, but I am struggling to see all of this sussed out from the small amounts of media interaction available. Kekalainen has never struck me as particularly arrogant—certainly not for a NHL General Manager.
