I knew this would happen, and blame Tre for not dealing a single one of these guys last year. Why would any team want to give us a haul for Lindholm or Toffoli Backlund in the summer when this year's Pacioretty, Bjorkstrand etc are effective top 6 guys who will be available for free

On Barn Burner, they had Frank on and said nothing is on the front burner for the Flames right now. Doesn't mean that doesn't change but no where close to anything right now. He mentioned teams calling about Lindholm are told they intent to sign him. I think not discussing packages for Lindholm just in case is a mistake but we'll see how things play out today. I'd wager the under right now with flames first rounders of 1.5 tonight.

With cap space being at a premium right now the only way that I expect that the Flames will get very good offers right now will be if they take on a large portion of the contract or if they hold onto players and deal them at the deadline. The problem though is that they run the risk of injury or players holding out. Conroy has no real leverage right now and to make a trade may not be in the best interest of the Flames long term.

Realistically Lindholm should be able to get a better return than Bo Horvat but those offers aren’t going to come in the summer. Rebuilding teams usually get their best assets by trading in January or February when there are a lot of contenders for the playoffs pushing for an extra bump, to build depth and replace players injured over the season.

The Flames won’t be likely to get a 2023 first but they should be able to get a good haul for 2024.

Pretty late to the party, but somewhat surprised Toffoli was the first domino to fall out of everyone. Not surprising to hear so much chatter league wide about Flames' players wanting out and an imminent fire sale incoming though, I too wouldn't be happy sharing a locker room with the those two pouting prima donnas.

In terms of next season, Backlund is the key for me. In my opinion, he's the team's MVP and where he goes, the Flames go next season which is pretty sad considering he turns 35 next season. If the offers are truly underwhelming, might as well keep some of these guys, get some extra mileage from them and trade them at the deadline instead. Personally, I'm all for rebuilding, so I don't really care what happens either way at this point.

It's not "luck".

Back in the day Cowperson put out a great piece on some of the generations in the NHL. Average age dropped in the 80's when scoring was highest. If you were an over 30 player you were out of the league. Clutch and grab took over and the league got older.

We're back to a faster open game at the moment and we have a cap. Long term deals to anyone over 29 is a bad idea. We should be taking the view that at 33yrs old 98% of the league will be retired.

Add in the new complexity of the cap in this era. Teams haven't set budgets unless forced by economics of their region, everyone has spent to the cap...so liquidity has been undervalued. Covid and a flat cap jammed everyone even harder. Teams are waking up to the fact that this league is won by goals for and against efficiency per dollar now.

Giving term to lower the AAV isn't as attractive as it once was. Players are going for free now. The next step is a move towards limiting term. We could see a day where no one is offering 7-8yr deals to 27yr olds.

Wait until the deadline. Picks are at their highest value right before the draft. Teams will lose key pieces while in their competitive window and need to trade for help during the season.

You've been asleep the last 5yrs under the cap...probably longer.

Teams have the most flexibility starting this week. That flexibility declines to zero at the deadline.

Every day after July 1 that these two aren't extended is detrimental to value, not adding value.
