Now that it's official...

Brad Treliving is an average GM. One thing Treliving did well, whether it was to his detriment or his success, was not shy away from making big moves. This is important because bold moves are what will need to be done in Toronto if they're getting over the top. That may be a big reason he was picked here.

However, Treliving is also going to a team suffering from two things that he could never actually find a consistent answer for in Calgary. Coaching and goaltending. Hopefully what ever he learned in Calgary can be used and applied here.

His most glaring mistake was not locking up Gaudreau after the 21/22 season. Kind of a down season, he probably would've come cheaper, and more importantly would've guaranteed him being here for years, as well as likely the rest of the core as a result.

The lack of action/hardball approach that summer set the dominoes for everything falling apart a year later.

As someone else put it, his shortcomings are on being predictive and acting wisely to ensure desired outcomes later.

No problem with Tre and for the most part wish him success. I think it will be interesting to see how he deals with the media up there in that market.

Does anyone else find it fitting that the Maple Leafs new GM is nicknamed "Tree"?

He is a wizard for signing deals and doing trades, but his lack of foresight put the team in a bad position

What better way to take some time off from the intensity and pressure of being an NHL GM than to become the GM of the Maple Leafs?

Hopefully he can get them over the hump. He tried with the Flames, and I appreciate that he took big shots in trying to get the team to win it all, but he left the team in quite a mess when he walked out the door, albeit the ownership very likely had a hand in that too.

I'm expecting Lindholm to Toronto in the near future.

Haha, Lanny...

Just like you incorrectly predicted that Tre would be lucky to get another GM role (he gets the hardest one to get and frankly, the one with the most eyes focused on), I predict you'll be wrong about Tre destroying the Leafs...

Sure, if Nylander comes back. I think Nylander is underutilized in TO, he has some serious talent.

I have to start with the caveat that we don't know what (if ANY) limitations were imposed on Treliving. Maybe some moves were either blocked or forced on him.

I will say that he wasn't a particularly great GM. The Flames were a wildly inconsistent team under his tenure, but consistently mediocre in the playoffs (at best). Treliving didn't build a team that would even make the playoffs consistently year-to-year, and when he decided to move on, he was currently one of the longest tenured GMs in the league. This was "Treliving's Team" top to bottom. Whether you want to blame the lack of success on the players or the coaching, I think that it makes for an irrelevant conversation, as the GM is responsible for both players and coaches.

Again, we can't know if there were any constraints on his job. All we have is the record the Flames had under him, and IMO, it was mediocre. There were definitely good things about him and his tenure here (his work ethic, his confidence to make a big move) and definitely some not so good things (spending too much draft capital, inability to identify and hire good coaches, his UFA signings).

Having said all of this, I am also of the opinion that one stop does not make a career. Some GMs (and coaches) improve over their experience, as we can actually expect for any career. Maybe he will be better in Toronto (I hope not - nothing against Treliving, but I hate the Leafs and can't wish them success even with Brodie and Giordano on the team). Fletcher was a terrible GM at first in Atlanta, but he grew on the job and became one of the league's best GMs for a while, and then kind of faltered toward the end of his career. Sutter I think was an amazing GM for a while, and he got this team to the finals. He faltered near the end as he was too determined to win now, and didn't do enough to see the 'cycle' through. Would he be a better GM the 2nd time around? Maybe. Probably not in his case, as I think a good GM in today's world has to collaborate effectively, but you get my point. You can expect improvement in their 2nd and 3rd stints (and even beyond) as you could with anyone in any career. Not everyone does improve, however.

It will be interesting to see how he does. That's a good team in Toronto right now (and I hate saying it), but it seemed like to me that the biggest weakness Treliving had in Calgary was an inability to push this team to that next level, for whatever reason. The Flames just never became a great playoff team. Will he be able to fix Toronto's lack of playoff success? I guess we will find out.
