and like his classmates he will be paying off his student debt for the next 20 years.
Harvard students don’t have student loans for the most part. I have no idea about Coronado’s family situation, but about 1 in 5 Harvard students pay nothing and are on full scholarship or grant.
You staple Coronato to Backlunds hip and sort the rest out as it may. I do wonder if they work with him at the center ice position as well over the next year. See if that's something he can excel at in the NHL.
Agree. Backlund is the best person on the team by far for the kid to learn under.
Also, given two of his teammates have already signed, if Coronato is going to get signed by the Flames, I'd anticipate it happens in the next day or two.
If he signs a 2022-23 contract with the Flames, he can only play with the Flames and not the Wranglers. Because he is 20, he does not need to actually play a game in order to burn the first year of the contract. His 3-year contract would expire in 2025 and he would not qualify for RFA because he wouldn't have enough pro games played this season. This would put him in the same situation Gaudreau was in when negotiating his second contract (no RFA leverage).
If he signs a 2023-24 contract with the Flames, he cannot play with the Flames, but he could play with the Wranglers for the rest of their season, including the playoffs. His 3-year contract would expire in 2026 and he would qualify for RFA and a potential offer sheet, which would give him extra leverage when negotiating his second contract.
We all assume he'll burn the first year of his contract (and he likely will), but a couple of other players from his draft class recently opted to take the second route and signed contracts for next season, playing out the year in the AHL. Corson Ceulemans (25th overall) and Josh Doan (37th overall) both signed 2023-24 contracts earlier this month when their college seasons ended.
