IMO though this has gone far past the point of reasonable. It's now entirely reasonable for fans and followers of the team to wonder WTF is happening. The dearth of statements from the player and the team are puzzling, and frankly troubling. Tre's initial statement becomes less relevant/ more interest inducing all the time. If Kyllington doesn't want people to speculate, then he should control the narrative and release a statement about what is happening. Otherwise, he should rightly anticipate people speculating wildly about his current whereabouts and intentions to return.

Here's my speculation... the team probably has good reason to be handling the situation the way they have.

Good to give him privacy for sure and not speculate to wildy. But was wondering if there has ever been a situation like this where a player just went awol and nobody knew why. Excpet for the team.

How does this work with his contract? Does it still expire in 2 years? Or does it stop ticking while this situation goes on?
I’m assuming he’s not being paid, but who knows.

Big Buff?
But then didn't he get suspended so his $$'s were off the books?
This whole situation is messed up.

The fact that the team never suspended him suggests that it is something beyond his control, so giving him a timeline to make a decision probably wouldn't be appropriate.

The whole thing is very strange. Unless he has been skating/in condition it looks like he will not be playing this year? Don't know...buy him out, free up the space? Waivers? Trade won't work. He also needs to bear some weight here to help out his team?

I’m guessing he will be LTIR as soon as Treliving thinks they need the space. I’m guessing they’ll toll his contract or something if they think he’ll return. Blue Jackets did they with a player.

Such a unique situation. Has this ever happened before? I know some guys have taken extended leave due to their own mental or physical health but it’s always been public and handled via official league channels.
Just thinking about all the options, if it’s permanent he could retire. Or maybe mutually cancel the contract?
If it’s some sort of family issue and he’s on what’s basically compassionate leave, can he be placed on LTIR? Or flames could suspend him?
Seems a bit heartless if he’s grieving but ultimately I imagine there will be a point where flames cut him loose and seek to free up that spot and cap space. As much as they might want to support a player, there’s so much more at stake that I imagine there’s a point they move to seek relief.
And if it’s anything to do with his health directly, then I imagine it’s clearly covered in the cba cap rules and LTIR.

I would suspect that whatever is going on is more serious than helping out the team.
I would be surprised if he plays this season but would also assume the team isn't going to force a decision on anything.

I think this was asked before, but I couldnt find it, but if he doesnt play this year, can they commute a year of his contract?
I mean...if they want to.

If it is a mutual decision, they can do whatever I think. Adding another year would be as simple as making an extension.
If the Flames want to slide the contract for another year and Kylington doesn't, I assume lawyers, the NHL, and NHLPA will probably have to get together and figure it out.

Seems like most previous cases were fully established players...or guys on the fringe like McGrattan or Ferland (don't remember if we even knew about their issues before they returned?). I can't recall anything similar to OK who is a barely established middle-roster guy.

I'm all for OK having privacy as there's clearly a serious matter here... but at the same time, hoping for a resolution that is in the team's best interests too.

This has the makings of something that really requires proper handling, empathy and an appropriate timeline for what is now going into 2023. I don't know if this is considered precedent setting or just something that the Flames or the NHL may not have dealt with before but it's definitely different.
I am not a NHL CBA guy but safe to assume that it's reasonable to think it may not be a physical or mental health or else he would be on LTIR. If you physically can't do the job than LTIR is designed to have teams with cap flexibility.
If he was involved in the NHL player assistance program for whatever assistance he may be needing, that is usually disclosed with the player privacy being respected.
There are rules and processes/procedures to follow in business and in pro sports so you don't have things going off the rails with people doing whatever they want and having an affect on other teams and the league as a whole.
As I said earlier, something regarding this has the hallmark of being something rather unique. Doubtful it's mental, physical, criminal etc.
Either way I wish him well

I do, and it's not my place to reveal. But it will likely become public at some point, and it will be understood why they don't need to add any pressure with deadlines.

This is definitely weird, and strange, and doesn't fall nice and neatly into any category I can think of that would normally keep a player out.
Until I hear otherwise, I'm just going to assume that he's fallen into the Upside Down.
