I apologize for saying that it was "almost guaranteed" that we were gonna pick up a depth defenseman.

Humble of ya, but ta know, if I had the chance to make that wager, I would've bet too.
I suppose those couple games of Stone playing "show me", were enough.

Stone will likely see some action in the last 6-10 games of the year. I'd like to see Tanev specifically get some rest. He plays the game hard. It's a miracle to me he hasn't been hurt this year (knock wood)

Carpenter's the prototypical "grit" guy that all hockey coaches say they want more of. 'Hawks used him as #3C or #4 C, and did not hesitate to match him up, as a shut down guy, against top lines. Was a stalwart on the #2 PK, with Toews out there to win faceoffs as #1 PK. Responsible on D, relentless on forecheck. I had no complaints about the guy.

BT himself stated that he was trying but was not willing to pay the price asked to add a guy that may never really play or at very least would only play in case of injury to a LS Dman.
When you see what the morons up North were willing to give up for a bottom pairing guy, i have to agree with him.

I didn’t watch too much of the guy, the most I remember is him eliminating the Heat short handed, after winning a face off against Jankowski. However, his analytics with a QoC of 11% don’t suggest he was shutting down top lines with any regularity. He seems like a decent PKer, but we have a lot of those, and one of the best PK’s already.

I saw Richardson as the weakest link in the rotating fourth line guys ... couldn't do much with the puck on his stick. I think he was likely in the right spots defensively to limit the damage, and was good on draws ... clearly Sutter liked him.
Not expecting much different from Carpenter to be honest.
If they spend a little less time in their own zone that they did with Richardson it's a better depth piece.

I agree, younger too and much more left in the tank so to speak. He looked good in his long run with Vegas in their inaugural year as well, I really dig the trade to be honest!
Treliving is on record saying the two things weren't connected. They were going to acquire Carpenter whether Richardson cleared waivers or not. In fact, it appears they waived Richardson specifically to make cap room for the Carpenter trade.
They are totally connected, as you point out.
I’m sure they’re disappointed in losing Richardson. I imagine they were thinking of Carpenter as added depth. Now it’s more of a question as to whether he is an upgrade over Richardson, which I suppose he is but probably not by much.
Too bad they couldn’t have put someone on LTIR like every one else does.
what happens if Vancouver puts Richardson back on Waivers? Do the Flames get first chance to pick him up?
Depends on if other teams filled waiver claims on Richardson. If there was a team higher in the standings than Vancouver that also put in a claim they have priority over the Flames. Otherwise the Flames can pick him up, but I don't think that he's going to be eligible to play in the playoffs if they get him back.
The two things that aren't connected are losing Richardson and getting Carpenter. The things that are connected are putting Richardson on waivers and getting Carpenter.
They had to waive Richardson to make the trade work, but they didn't have to lose him and probably did not expect that anyone would claim him.
