Dominated might be a stretch, and the Flames had 5 power plays, but I would agree they were the better team and deserved to win. Andersen was bailed out three times by his defenseman, I thought it was the rare occasion where our goaltender was actually better tonight but we still lost.
Just awful luck tonight and a completely uninspiring overtime performance.

Sure they do, but OT loses are not loses per se.

When your team seldom gets outplayed each night, it’s hard to steal a win.

Sometimes you have to give credit to your opponent. That may be the best penalty killing I have seen in a long time. They made the Flames powerplay look really, really bad. I think there was a stretch of 2.5 powerplays where the Flames didn't even get a shot on net. They were also very lucky as you could play that game 10 times and 9 out of 10 they don't fish the puck on the goal line in all those instances. That one where the defender one handed his stick against the puck and post and the puck not going into the net was a 1 in 100 play. That said for the talent level on that team I feel the Hurricanes play a style reserved for teams with less talent that want to slow down the game and reduce scoring events.

100% #### the puck for not going in on that incredibly fluky double deflection/bounce to stay out of the net near the end of regulations. Couldn't even replicate that if you tried. Game of inches.

I think ppl may be missing the fact that the Canes had 3 of their best dman sitting south of the boarder for covid protocol

One concern outside of the powerplay is the fact that secondary scoring has totally dried up. The team needs more from Backlund, Coleman, and Monahan. The lack of a legit 2nd line center is starting to become glaring.

Flames could really use a top 6 shooting forward, like a legit shoot first guy with a cannon of a shot.
Our PP has been pretty abysmal the last few games, it seems they've got 1 real "strategy" where they just try to force the tic-tac out front pass to Mony for the tap in but if it doesn't work its just pass around the perimeter/Johnny's muffin shot.
We're great at passing it for over a minute, but Lindholm isn't shooting like he used to... Hopefully we can get someone to compliment not only the PP but just a pure shooter in general.
Or... perhaps throw your 16g forward who's been shooting pretty good this year on the TOP PP unit.... maybe?

I’m trying to argue that your reliance on +/- as some sort of indictment on Monahan is not a good one. And that his -1 last night was meaningless. You are stretching to try and pin a loss on a guy who had a whopping one less shot than “any of those players”. And faceoffs, while not a great stat for him, depend a lot on who he was dealing with. Anyway, there were plenty of worse players last night. One of them on the top line, a couple on line two.

Agreed. The 4 v 4 OT stint was a glimpse of what OT should maybe be. At least it’s still hockey.
Canes are good — fast, skilled, scrappy, aggressive. They’re what the Flames are trying to be. Shows the need for more strength throughout the lineup. Didn’t really see a huge drop off with their bottom 6 in terms of puck pressure etc.
That said, I thought Lucic had maybe his best game, and L4 was better than I’ve usually seen them. Even so, old warriors Lewis and Richardson are going to hurt us as games get faster and more competitive. Let’s see what some young speed from Stockton — Pelletier, #2 in AHL scoring — can do.
Also, please, someone, make sure Zadorov never touches the puck again .

Trade deadline wish list is Laine and a PP offensive defenceman specialist.

Agreed. I hardly know any players on that team but Necas was noticeable all night. Agile, smart, creative with the puck. Add a player like him and the Flames hit the next level.

Taking a while to get to 5000

Watching last night I couldn't tell if this is a team just going into a slump or about to break out of one.

Fair to assume that we need another D man and a few scoring forwards to get over the hump? Also what to do with 23? one of the highest paid players and probably ranks 10-11 on 5v5 play. It is sad to say but he's horrible. 1/3 of the season through and 1 even strength goal... yikes

The team also needs to make sure they don't get the same materials or contractors for what was used for the new Islanders rink. Islanders haven't won a game yet in that rink.

Is Monahan a relative of yours or something?
Your stretching to excuse everything he struggles at is incredible. Can't acknowledge any negatives ever.

Have to disagree with this completely.
Lewis has been tremendous IMO. No he will never light up the score sheet but there is very little to not like about his defensive game.
Plays the right way and eats some important minutes without the coach having to worry about him.
Way better than I expected, at least thus far, and think he may be the best off-season addition thus far when factoring his role and cost.
Just a really smart player who does his job night in and night out.

Well that was a frustrating and unlucky game to find a way to lose. Carolina wins without even shooting the puck in. We should've had that one in regulation. Carolina is a great and fast team though and their PK was amazing. Both goalies were incredible. At least we got a point because if Markstrom wasn't on point our bad bounces could have led to a regulation loss
