Not sure off hand, but this is the post ELC contract for both.

I look at it this way - was there anyone taken afterwards who would was better value for the Flames. Especially before they picked again. If not - they made good use of the pick.
Do I wish he wanted to play for Calgary? Sure but whatever.

That doesn't mean he will win another Norris
I have my doubts...there are better defenders so unless he outscores them by a country mile he won't get it.
I said the deal was fair and he makes 9.5M its not like I said he was bad or something

Well didn't say he would win the Norris. You made it sound like playing Philadelphia 10 times was why he won the norris.

When have UFA years become irrelevant? You keep saying that but it simply isn't true.

UFA years aren't irrelevant, but when you get $9m on a post-ELC contract, they are close to it.
Also, the conversation has been a comparison against Makar, and their situations/ages are very similar, so the UFA years are pretty irrelevant on that front as well.

If they were irrelevant why did Makar only give up 1 UFA year? Instead of going for the full 8 and giving up 3 UFA years?
I would say because it would have cost Colorado a lot more per year to add 2 more UFA years.
Fox won the Norris at 23. That is pretty special.

You're referring to age and term here, not UFA years specifically. And we have no idea who wanted longer term - him or Colorado.
Bottom line is that these guys are signing for the same AAVs now, with post-ELC contracts, that the top UFAs are signing for. The days of the deep discounts for RFA years are gone. Meaning UFA years are far less relevant.

Which top UFA's have signed recently? Honestly don't remember one for a while. Most are signing before they hit UFA.

there have been lots of signings in the last year or two that have covered varying numbers of UFA years (Jones, Nurse, etc). And it has become difficult to tell at a glance how many UFA years they cover, because the AAVs are so similar now. The difference just isn't there any more.

Te term is relevant now for player control. Colorado controls Makar for 5 years after this one. Fox is controlled for 8 years after this year.
Colorado would have loved to get an additional 2 years of control. But it would have cost them.

Yes, term matters for player control.
(as opposed to UFA years)

It was a huge factor...they blew them out multiple times when they had major issues and he racked up a ton of points. NHL awards were a little off last season overall...some players had major advantages depending on how the schedule worked out.
All I said was his Norris was a one off IMO...you disagreeing with that is in fact saying he will win the Norris lol.
