It's not too long until they need to start playing the extortion game with a few cities like Anaheim, San Jose, Ottawa...it wouldn''t hurt to have a more recent example to point to.
If you add a $200 million relo fee to a purchase price I’d assume you’re pushing $500 or $600 million again. Or straight relo then you’re back to needing an arena to move into.

I do hear you on the extortion front but IMO we are seeing these cities have cards of their own to play. I think the league would like to preserve the scarcity aspect of franchise value which helped them hit those insane expansion fees.

Did ASU ever build an arena? That proposed deal was the best thing on the table for the Coyotes.

It's currently under construction and will be opening next season. Its capacity will only be about 5,000.

So the Coyotes will almost sell it out.

That still seems wildly optimistic.

The brand itself is cool, but it's become the brand of a #### show more than a hockey club.

This is unfortunately true due to being run by complete idiots since day 1..

I would honestly welcome a full rebrand.

Arizona Scorpions or something

It's heavily dependent on Canadians and people that have moved from the NE which isn't surprising. The grass roots growth of hockey in Houston just isn't there and big reason as you mention is the lack of rinks. The town used to have four good hockey facilities and one couldn't stay in business. Now we have 3 and a 4th which is a little sketchy.

I stand by my original comment that if you want a model for how hockey would do in Houston, you look at Dallas, Miami and Atlanta. The NHL was not always a rousing success in Dallas. There were many lean years where you could buy a ticket for a song and sit wherever you'd like. It took building a consistent winner to get some traction.

Other things to consider:

Houston is a very diverse city. Hockey is not a very diverse sport.

Houstonians love sports but their true love is football. High school and college football will get supported no matter what. We've seen the NFL leave once when the owner turned on the city and the Texans waiting list has now evaporated. Astros all Rockets all get supported when they win. Not so much in the down times. An NHL team would be an extreme version of that.

A comment was made that Houston would be a better hockey market than Seattle. No way. There is exponentially more minor hockey in Seattle, and Phoenix too for that matter. LV is a unique case. Pent up demand for pro sports that doesn't exist in Houston.

The chatter for an NHL team in Houston comes more from the internet than anyone with the $$'s to bring it here. Fertitta last made a comment over three years ago and even then he said the expansion fees were crazy and any Houston deal would have to make sense economically. The NHL has a vested interest in preserving their obscene expansion fees and better off propping up existing teams than do something that destroys that value the next time around. Which is evidenced by their actions in Phoenix.

I'd love hockey in Houston. It's a huge city and over the long haul you'd find a core market that would support it IMO. But it would be nothing like the LV and Seattle expansions and the explosion of season tickets. Which is why no one in Houston is too keen on paying some ridiculous price. So the Phoenix ownership group will have to exhaust every last option and then some before there is realistic chance of that team moving to Houston. IMO

I'm on the same page. I left Houston last year after living there for 4 years and I never felt (beyond market size) that Houston would be a good market because the hockey community is so small (although very committed) and the sports fan there is deeply committed to other sports and even then will waiver unless the team is a winner.

If the NHL were to move to Houston, I think the best way they'd become successful over the long haul would be to take the same approach the Stars took and get completely immersed in the community (build rinks every where, reduce costs and other barriers to entry) and even then it would take a long time to build a fan base aside from fielding a winner asap which would be highly unlikely if it was the Coyotes franchise neck deep in a gutting rebuild that were the franchise to move to Houston.

Complete and total thread highjacking: Jordan! You're probably in the know: where can get a Coyotes Reverse Retro™ jersey? I like it a lot.

Likely an alternate this season along with the white kachina returning as primary away jersey - which is my all-time favorite Yotes jersey

Hopefully it's approved, I think they'd do well in Tempe.

Solves where they'll go, but not where they need to be in a year. That project would take 3-4 years

Do they fix up the Veterans Coliseum? I could see the city of Phoenix having a vested interest in rehabilitating that site. Maybe they can turn it into a viable venue for other events, like concerts, after the Yotes' temporary stay, similar to how NYCB Live on Long Island was repurposed.

Unless the Coyotes are being completely unreasonable in their proposal, seems like the arena in Tempe is theirs:

I've been in it. It's a dump, would cost a fortune to upgrade.

I don't know where else they'd play in the meantime. A few weeks ago, Craig Morgan speculated maybe Chase Field with the roof closed?

The Nassau Coliseum reno cost $180m.
