Just going to point out the obvious, but if you are going to have a gigantic flat roof on that thing, what is stopping you from putting solar panels across it, batteries in the basement, and a big LED sign letting the world know how much of the electrical operation of the building is self replenishing.

I think it looks good from a simple render. I certainly think it will age better than the crazy spaceship up north. Lets be honest though, the exterior of a building does not a hockey rink make. I want to have the best damn atmosphere possible on the inside, with functionality and clean sight lines and opportunity to hear fan noise. Edmonton’s new barn is absolutely void of personality inside and you can hear a pin drop in the upper level even during a battle of Alberta.

With that said, I wish their was budget to really make a building with a lot of character. I understand why there isn’t… but I’ll personally be taking in the last few years of the Saddledome with appreciation of how cool that building is/was.

Or… the neon cowboy from the Corral. And the giant goalie mask from the dome. Lots of cool options that aren’t going to be shown in a render.

Style points are secondary to me after functionality

That said, how on earth can you render an exterior for a club that is coming out of the iconic bowl and colors of the saddledome and serve up such a bland, vanilla design to be its successor?

The lack of awareness there is mind-blowing.

That said... its very early to be immediately grabbing pitchforks also with so little material to judge from. So let's chill out a tad.

I hear you but trying to be iconic can easily backfire, especially when attempted by people with little design sense (Edmonton being a perfect example). Sometimes it pays to be safe than sorry.

I'm torn.

I think they should have modelled it to look more like the Edmonton library tank. That is architecture.

I think Calgarians are just more reserved and conservative, minimalistic if you want.

Up in Edmonton, they are very insecure, so they want flashy things that scream out "Hey, look at us, we are world class! pay attention to us! we exist!"

That's always been my view of the two cities and it's people.

It's not merely your view, it's the unvarnished reality. For the most part.

Some west calgarians have their five car garages and castles. But if its possible to do that in a non-chalant or show-y way, those calgarians manage to do it.

And you can be sure as hell, none of them would plaster Tkachuk all over a Ferrari to be a one day Twitter sensation/joke.

Yeah I saw those renders about a year ago, top secret stuff... Didn't want to risk sharing them early.

Of course I immediately played around with things to try and give it some personality:

But I'm no architect, it just seemed immediately bland.

Is it really a cost issue to give the exterior a little more curb appeal, and not just big brown looking walls?

Yep. Same as a spec home to a custom home. Get ready to spend.

I hope they go for a bold and innovative design that takes the already inverted bowl to the next level.
Rendering :

There’s no such thing as a spec NHL arena. They’re all custom.

The above shot if you made the three sort of "panels" covering the larger part of the building red also might be interesting.

Is it just me, or does it look like it might be a giant horse shoe shape?

Looks like something built for the 1988 Olympics

Still think it looks like a big cineplex. Don’t understand the big wall on the left side if the render above. I think the design is quite bland bordering on fugly. I was hoping for more.

Where are the windows in this thing? One of the first things I notice when I go to some other arenas is they are light and bright inside. Tons of windows and sight lines that seem to open up the whole building. This rendering looks like a dark block of concrete. I hope they learn from the last block of concrete they gave us. Open it up, please.

This is the look I was hoping for. A little less of a monolithic Costco, dropped in the middle of a parking lot.

I won't get too worked up over it yet, but I am hoping for more light, perhaps some more wood like the library soffit, anything that is a little more welcoming.
