Has there been a lot of this? Other than Palmieri, who was traded, and Hall, who is a higher value asset, I haven’t been paying close attention

There are red flags though when the GM is constantly in on players yet can never get a deal done.

Just rip it down in the off-season and qualify Bennett for 1 season. He’s a good centre for a year of rebuilding.
What an awful season for Flames fan. Truly horrific right from the get go.

If the ask was Monahan for Anderson then this place would have gone nuts if that trade went down and I still wouldn't do that today even with Monahan's struggles.
My guess is that they were trying to get PLD included in a package of some kind.
I still hope Columbus would bite on Monahan for Laine.

Hall and Palmieri are good examples. Another good example would be Treliving holding out Bennett earlier this season. There may be other examples, but I don't have any off the top of my head. Or there may not be. You could be right. But I just think it makes sense to protect a player from injury in a meaningless game standings wise if that player may be traded in less than 48 hours.

Punishment for on ice play? Perhaps. Coach sending a message? Perhaps. Team sending a message to not have a situation where your agent is airing dirty laundry, especially without talking to the team? Wouldn’t surprise me in the least
|
Okay, fair enough. I didn't think there was a reason given by the team, but I thought it came soon after his trade request, so I thought it made sense that it was for injury protection.

Taking a while to get to 5000

People did think that though, and then the fake trade to Montreal surfaced.

* Nobody has ever confirmed a trade request, as far as I am aware. Friedman asked the agent if Bennett may be open to a change in scenery, and the agent said yes. Tre was pissed because that was the first he had heard of it.
If anyone has seen a straight confirmation of an actual request, I’d be interested to see it

The language was a little stronger than may be open to a change of scenery. It was "Bennett wants a change of scenery."
https://www.richmond-news.com/nation...trades-3308968
In the above article, the Canadian Press confirms that Darren Ferris told them Sam Bennett and Victor Mete have asked to be traded.

We're not selling anyway!
With Montreal dropping two straight the Flames now only need to go 14-2-0 the rest of the way to get in!

And I don’t see any quotes in the second link, so again I’m leaning towards spin/carefully used language to make a story.

Not sure what you need to see. Friedman asked Ferris if his client wanted to go elsewhere. (Change of scenery) Ferris said yes.
Then Bennett himself was interviewed the next day by Steinberg who asked him directly if he has requested a trade.
Instead of saying no, he gave this response.

“I think I’m just going to keep that between my agent and Treliving. I don’t really need to get into that much. My job is to just play hockey and do my job. I’m going to leave everything else to them.”

So what is he leaving to Treliving and his agent if he didnt want a trade?
I mean it's OK that he wants/wanted out....this happens all the time in the NHL but rarely made public.
Now maybe with the coaching change since all this happened, he has changed his tune, which is also OK but lets not try and re-write what is plainly obvious.

"But according to the agent for Sam Bennett, he would like a change of scenery."
And the second article confirms the trade request. The source is Ferris. "In an email to The Canadian Press, Ferris confirmed media reports that two of his clients, Montreal Canadiens defenceman Victor Mete and Calgary Flames forward Sam Bennett, have asked to be traded."
I think its pretty clear there was a trade request.

I think it’s pretty clear there wasn’t, since the team wasn’t aware.

Nobody is re writing anything
It was the same at the time. Neither Bennett nor the Flames flat out said he directly requested a trade
And yes, it was totally understandable if he did want an opportunity to expand his role.
But there is a difference between ‘I’d like a bigger role and if there is not opportunity here then I’m open to a change in scene’ and ‘trade me, dammit!’
I was looking for a direct quote from a principal party and there is not one that I am aware of
And again, Tre was not aware of it

Firstly, “can never get a deal done” is just hyperbole. He gets his fair share of deals done.
Second, every deal is unique. There’s no pattern to the deals that didn’t get done. Kadri was a NTC that wasn’t waived. Stone was price for a rental and the refusal to negotiate an extension. Anderson was likely simply price.
You have to count UFAs too, and not only was Treliving in on Markstrom - he got him, ahead of other bidders.
The only red flag I see is Kadri and Stone and supposedly other owners of MNTCs not wanting to come to Calgary which is less a Treliving issue and more of a city issue.
