So does Ryan need to clear waivers again if they send him back?
Not until he spends 30 days on the roster or he plays 10 games since he last cleared.

Haha I guess you can all stop freaking out about Ryan being scratched.

Based on the 10 game opener losing streak, including one January start, I have very little confidence in a win. Here’s hoping the new decade flips the narrative. Go Flames Go!

In Calgary, decades end after 10 years

Smart move putting Ryan in. Have no idea who they'd scratch instead of Nordstrom so the lineup should indeed be at its best today

If they are all 4 point games does that not make them just 2 point games?

Ryan should also clear every time because his contract is too large for other teams to make it worth it.

Remember, Ryan becomes cheaper for teams to take on with every passing day.

If the Flames waive him with six weeks remaining in the season, he no longer costs $3.125 million against the cap — he costs just $742,224.

No, because the Flames are still directly competing against those teams for a playoff spot. Each game the Flames win is also two points the opposition is prevented from acquiring (assuming regulation wins, obviously). This affects playoff positioning far more than in the usual case where most games are with teams outside the division, where if the opposition gains or loses points it matters little to the Flames.

This means not only winning, as is the usual goal, but preventing the other team from winning, and preventing the other team from even gaining a point. Thus three point games are far more damaging than usual, even if the Flames were to win those games.

This isn't the case when playing teams in other divisions as is the normal situation for most of the season's games.

This was explained to all right after the announcement happened, yet panic ensued. It's almost like the GM of an NHL team has a plan and is fully aware of the situation. I have pretty good balance, but I might have fallen out of my chair if Ryan wasn't in the lineup tonight.

Here's to hoping the Flames win game one of a season for the first time in 4,123 days.

Well we can always hope that someone helps the Flames make room for trade deadline day.

I guess on the other hand, you should theoretically be able to make up ground because your last 10 games will be against your direct competition for playoff spots. No out of Conference no one cares 3 point games.

Should be a fun season. Games should mean more, but the Canadian Division by default is the easiest one to get to the playoffs in. You only need to be better than 3 teams.

I don't get it. Our best line in the playoffs was the Lucic-Bennett-Dube line with Bennett and Dube carrying most of the offensive load.

Why on earth aren't they playing Bennett and Dube together??

Tight, grind of a game today. Goaltenders will decide it, along with blocked shots and players putting their bodies on the line.

11-1 flames

Because, unlike the other two, Dube belongs in the top 6

Always a treat to see the CP over reaction after 1 period, 1 game, 1 week, and I think tonight won't disappoint in that regard.

Flames will be fine. Markstrom as long as he comes as advertised, will keep the team in a great spot.

Tkachuk has to start to back up on the ice, some of the noble talk he spews off of it.

JG and SM not worried about. They aren't as bad as many made it out to be last season.

Defenders I think will be fine. Active D is required in this league so let's hope the newly minted guys contribute there.

Secondary scoring will make or break this team, as had been the case the last 2 seasons especially. Lindholm is part of that.

There certainly will be some surprises, as to how far some players fall off a cliff, and how some really step it up. Injuries and rest will be huge for all teams this year, it's depth and navigating those issues properly, to have success.

Gfg.
And don't lose.
