And yet, they're just... not all that good.

Either Lehner is a ####ing moron, or he's just saying this to try to make the right kind of noises about team unity. I'm assuming the latter. Fleury absolutely knew his agent would do that, and was okay with it. He all but admitted it in his press conference, but he didn't need to. Walsh has been around long enough not to do something like that without his client's say so.

I understand a lessening of the hate of the Canucks. Let's face it the rivalry has cooled in recent years and there just isn't as many hateable characters on their team right now. You have to give some credit for some of the pieces they've managed to draft/develop and to good young players playing well.
However, in no way shape or form do I want them advancing deep into the playoffs. They are still a rival. It's just that this iteration is a little less annoying than past teams.
As soon as Calgary/Vancouver have a game that has some controversial talking points everyone will remember what's what. The hate will return soon enough.

The Nucks got through the first round on a combination of Markstrom entering god mode and Binnington regressing to AHL mode. They are in tough now that the goaltending matchup is a wash.
Yeah I hate the Canucks but it didn't really develop until the 00s starting with that annoying Naslund, Bertuzzi, Kesler, Cooke, and Jovanovski team, including the epic 04 series, and culminating in their idiot fans rioting.
I will admit I cheered for them in the 1994 finals despite the heartbreak they had previously caused me. I appreciated their underdog status, loved Bure as a player, and thought they were a better alternative than Messier and all those ex-Oilers getting another Cup.

Funny to me seeing people say the Canucks "just aren't very good". Their record in 2019-2020 is almost identical to the Flames.
My suspicion is that the Flames would also have lost 5 zip to Vegas, and that we are seeing that vast gulf between the "aren't very good" and "are very good" teams. Vegas, Boston, Colorado, etc.
I think we all thought thought the Flames had a real window opening, but it's looking less like that, the last couple years.

They have some really good components, but some noticeable weaknesses, not unlike the Flames in that respect.
Keep in mind though that the Canucks were not supposed to be competitive this quickly after losing the Sedins. Most fans and Vancouver media were resigned to the idea that there would be a few seasons of being a bottom feeder while the rebuilt. Expectations were low, even even now, I get the sense they consider just being in the playoffs gravy at this point.
The Flames on the other hand, had real expectations and are failing to meet up to them.

Competitive this quickly?
The canucks missed the playoffs 4 years in a row and 5 out of the last 6 years.
That's not really all that quick.

I said "after the Sedins retired". It's only their 2nd season since the Sedins retired. They struggled before that, but it wasn't from lack of trying. Expectations were greater.
Once the Sedins retired, everyone thought that a long rebuild would have to start with that being ground zero. It has been accelerated by some pretty shrewd drafting.

Oh. See, my team is still in the play-offs so I'm going out and watching games still. But since you missed me, I guess I could I sit on my phone and give play-by-play about what it's like to see my team in round two? You know, let you live vicariously.
In truth, I knew Vegas was going to be hard for the Canucks. Same with the Stars. Of the teams remaining, only Colorado matches up well for them. Canucks still need some solid moves and for players like Rathbone, Hoglander and Podkolzin to be more than just hype. Future is bright though. I'm ecstatic with how the team has performed for their first real taste of play-off action. The real goal is to not Oiler back to Earth next season.

Yeah because everyone on here thinks the Flames had a great season...Markstom is awesome, they won 13 of 27 games with Demko in net and Markstom was hurt just before the break and the Canucks were falling down the standings. I doubt they make the playoffs without covid the way things were going

That doesn't really make it sound better that the Flames had a matching record...

I will admit that i have not watched this iteration of the Canucks a lot. That was the first time i watched an entire game. Did Quinn Hughes even play? Maybe he will play tonight.
I certainly don”t get the comparison to Makar, who appears much bigger, stronger, and faster.
