Yeah, I know they get payed lots to play etc, but locking a group of people down away from their kids and wives so they can entertain us seems like a bit much.

If they do go through with it, “entertaining us” will not be the main reason they would agree. There is a lot of money involved . Have you seen the projected escrow numbers if there is no finish to this season? It’s huge.
While I think they should cancel rest of season , I really think they are going to do playoffs this summer.

NBA has given permission for teams to open practice facilities where the government has allowed.
Adrian Wojnarowski
@wojespn
Beginning on May 1, the NBA is allowing teams to open their practice facilities to players in cities and states where local governments have eased stay-at-home orders, sources tell ESPN.

There will be an exemption for this. If the NHL picks Edmonton, you can be sure Dr. Hinshaw will be told to grant the exemption. Alberta will not miss out on the hundreds of millions in payments and spin offs. And why not. Sounds like Edmonton has a near perfect set up for this

I dunno man, Dr. Hinshaw doesn't strike me as the type to make exemptions for political $$$ and sporting events, she just broke the hearts of thousands of Albertan's with the shutdown of golf and didn't even flinch doing it. If hockey is allowed to be played before golf her credibility will be lost.

Absolutely not. If she makes a decision I am sure there will be data and reasoning to support it
Why are so many people on one hand hanging on for each new tidbit of information, of which there is a lot every day, and at the same time insistent on putting a stake in the ground absolutely right now.
Just a foolish look

Absolutely not what? I can't tell if you agree or not, my position is Hinshaw won't bow to political pressure.

Hundreds of millions? It will fill up a few hotels and put some arena staff to work. That's about it.

Yeah it wont be "100's" of millions but it will be 10's of millions when all is said and done.
Just hotel rooms alone would be many many millions. Then you add catering/restaurants and everything else that is an expense while travelling and it adds up in a hurry.
Usually about 50 people per team between players, coaches, management and media. Some a little more and some a little less. Then, in this scenario you would have to have expanded rosters for injury replacements. Add in the officiating staff and league personel...it gets pretty substantive. More like 60 per team X 31 teams and you are at 1860 rooms per night at say $150 per. Thats 280K per night for at least a month split between 4 sites. Somewhere around 30 million when all is said and done im guessing.
Thats assuming spouses and children aren't included. Then the consumption part of that tab rises.
Its a massive undertaking and one fraught with obstacles. Not the least of which is the players signing off on it all.

Slap Shots has learned a Return to Play Committee established by the league and the union has conducted a pair of conference calls over the past three days with regularly scheduled “meetings” to follow.
Gary Bettman, Bill Daly, and senior VPs Colin Campbell and Steve Hatze Petros represent the NHL, while the NHLPA is represented by Don Fehr, Mathieu Schneider, general counsel Don Zavelo, divisional rep Steve Webb, and active players John Tavares, Connor McDavid, James van Riemsdyk, Mark Scheifele and Ron Hainsey. Medical advisers from both the league and union are added to the calls when appropriate.
Friday night, deputy commissioner Daly told TSN’s Ryan Rishaug, “Everything depends on the facts and entire set of circumstances, but no, we do not believe that one positive test, or even multiple positive tests [would] necessarily shut the whole thing down.”
Following that, Daly told Slap Shots in an email exchange, “Of course people who test positive would be immediately removed from the mix.”
Asked if he could clarify his statements in the interview, Daly said, “Everything depends on precise circumstances. I’m not about to go through a million fact patterns that are different and completely hypothetical.

The idea to be the first league to open back up must be lucrative. I'm not sure how advertising works but if they do resume, it would be the only game in town for months.
With entertainment shut down for the foreseeable future, being the first of the big 4 sports leagues being up and running must be extremely appealing.

Sure, it won't be nothing, but in the context of whether or not a government should make a concession of its social distancing laws and what economic benefit comes along with it, 30 million and 300 million are 2 very different conversations. One could argue that 30 million essentially vanishes if anything were to go wrong or if it lead to a break in social cohesion that leads to increase cases or prolonged curve flattening.
Anyhow, looks like captain Connor has duped another group of people that he has some kind of leadership quality.
"Let's go, guys"
"Yes, we heard you, we're talking about the dining protocol for teams in the hotel."
"Let's go"
"Is that all this guy ####ing says"
"I think I heard him murmur, "we may never make the playoffs again" in the bathroom earlier, but it was hard to hear through all the sobbing"
"Guys... Let's go"
"Jesus, someone get mess on the phone"
"Go, let's?"

The NBA will be back before the NHL IMO (if either is)....so many fewer obstacles just based on venues and the amount of people that need to be involved.

Oh for sure...but that is JUST housing and feeding the personnel. Really so much more beyond that.
Its why I just dont see it happening. I keep doubling back to just the ability to make really good ice. Some places will be better than others for sure. Heat is one thing but you get into some of those places in the South and the humidity alone makes it almost impossible. And as it looks like right now, the governments that may be favorable to something like this would all be south of the 49th.
Just...so many things.

I'm no ice maker, but could that not be one of the best parts about this whole thing? No one in the stands has got to make for better ice no matter where, no?

Makes it easier for sure...but the air outside always plays a big factor.
I havent had to deal with an ice plant for about 15 years now and that one was getting aged at that time...so maybe the new tech etc eliminates a lot of the issues with all that.

You are forgetting about a one time payment as consideration for Alberta agreeing to do this. We all know this is only about money so why wouldn’t Alberta get a cut of the revenue saved by this. It’s not just hotel rooms and food

Hmmm. Well there are already several exemptions issued by her office to the social distancing rule cmoh order no 7, some of which includes oil sands work camps. So you might think again about whether her work is free of politics.
And then there is the slow and reluctant approach to addressing outbreaks in the meat plants.
