It's not even to do him some favor; it's more for the team to really know what we have in him.
An extended period, and he continues to make dumb plays and take unnecessary penalties, and it'll be clear.

Just imo of course.
Come on man, this isn't his first season.

The difference between Bennett on line 2 and not was so stark last night that I'm hoping we can finally put it to bed now.

This isn't the Calgary Bennetts, it's the Calgary Flames and if Bennett can't show he belongs on that line for longer than a period then the team needs to adjust and find someone who does.

It's not as if Mangiapane is spectacular or is an obvious coach favourite. Just being adequate is enough for him to keep his spot on that line. That's all bennett needed to be as well. Just adequately use his linemates, gain the zone and maintain possession. Set up in front of the net and try to deflect a shot, don't pinch too deep so that you're unable to cover your defensive assignment. Don't take bad penalties.

Mangiapane belongs there right now because he is able to make simple reads, uses his more talented linemates effectively and has the stick skills necessary to keep up. IMO, Bennett has demonstrated for 200+ games now that he doesn't have those skills.

Have to figure Mangiapane will make his share of mistakes up there too. For him at least its part of the learning process. Bennett, as noted, should be past that.

Honestly I'm sure Frolik will get back up there and find his groove and we'll see them settle into lines that we know work (or at least the stats tell us they work better)

3M
Bennett-Jankowski-Czarnik

That leaves the top line in tact (of course) and the defacto 3L of Mangiapane-Ryan-Lucic

I think the writing is on the wall with Frolik. Unbelievable to me that he doesn't get more icetime. He didn't get a shift until the half way part of the third period and immediately produced the best scoring chance of the game. Bennett out there with a minute left instead of Frolik probably cost Calgary the win.

It's nice that everyone got together to say the right things about keeping the team intact but Frolik's days in Flames sweater would be over if anyone in the league had been interested.

I think it will be difficult for Frolik to win his spot back again this year, especially if Mangiapane starts to convert on some goals as well.

I'd be rolling:

Line 1
Tkachuk - Backlund - Mangiapane
Lucic - Ryan - Frolik
Bennett - Quine - Dube

I don't think Bennett was developed properly. Should have taken the path through the AHL and worked his way up.

I suspect we'd see a different player today.

Toronto recently scored a similar goal where Spezza knocked the puck down to a teammate above the crossbar, which is legal.
Thanks AC, I wasn't even thinking about this last night and you are 100% correct and makes total sense. I thought the refs were out to lunch, looks like it was me and likely a lot of other fans!

Isn't it fun when the rules are so convoluted and unintuitive that lifelong fans of the sport don't fully understand them?

On to the Bennett issue from last night. I keep on saying it, that he needs to stop taking such terrible penalties, over and over again. You would think he would learn? If he isn't learning then put him in the box with some popcorn for a week or two. Seriously. He isn't scoring enough to help us win games, if he doesn't shape up and stop this stupidity then make him pay by sitting. He says he is ready to make a step and contribute more but I don't see it still.

I love the guy, I want to see it, I want to see him get on a roll but if he is costing the team then he needs to be held responsible. I thought he was going to play on the 2nd line last night? It didn't seem like that was the case for most of the night. I think there was a lot of juggling going on as well.

I thought we saw a lot of Lucic - Ryan - Bennett and a lot less of Tkachuk - Backlund - Bennett. If they are committed to helping this guy progress, why not give him like 5 games on the 2nd line, for real. Maybe once in a while put Frolik back up there, but why not just give him some real time up there. If he still sucks after 5 games, then we know what we have. A 3rd line energy guy, can't be out during the final few minutes of games, can't be counted on to tie or win games for us, just an energy dude who can chip in once in a while.

It is still game 3, I'm not worried.

Final note, Lucic has brought something to the table that was lacking on this team. I am grateful he is here, I just hope he can contribute on the score sheet as well. It seems when he gets the puck, the plays die on his stick far too often. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'll keep watching and see if that improves.

Agree with this. No reason for Peters to have Bennett out there with a minute left. After being demoted and taking a bad penalty early in the third, why even take the chance with him out there.

Woke up really sad this morning, letting the results of a sport outside of my control dictate my happiness.

I have a problem.

Nah. That's just living in the moment man.

What kind of boring life would that be where nothing affected us emotionally?

I say enjoy being invested in hockey because who knows what tomorrow brings.

Lindholm never gets to carry the puck. If you're worried about the Bennett that tries to do to much, and either loses the puck or takes a penalty, just put him on the first line, and let our most complete player centre the second.

Kings 4 Flames 3 (OT)

- Tkachuk supplies the spark for comeback
- Calgary terrible through 30 minutes
- Bennett experiment lasts a handful of shifts
- Third pairing making strides

Sorry for the delay folks ... coaching two midget teams this winter so there will be a lot of late ones! Any writers out there that want to do a few games please let me know.

I am impressed that the Flames had the resilience to take this game to overtime. Two years ago that game would have ended six nothing. Take the point, take the lesson and push on 79 games to go!

If anyone gets depressed following losses, I would advise skipping the next 2 games.

I am a huge Astros fan. Woke up this morning realizing that after following the team all season it is one game away from being over abruptly.

I can handle in season losses but it is always feels empty when your team is done for good. With the Flames last year it was after game 4 when you realized they were outgunned and weren't going to turn it around.

Anyway there is no doubt Flames will at the very, absolute worst, be in the hunt for the playoffs all year so may as well enjoy the 82 game ride. There will be plenty of losses in that long of a season.
