So given that Smith is the starter here - in the home opener no less - does this mean that Koskinen is officially the backup to start the season?

TSN seemed to have this as a policy. Mike Johnson, Ferraro, and Maguire especially did this all the time. Making some general statement at the beginning of the game (Mr X doesn’t seem to be engaged) and then patting themselves on the back as astute hockey experts each time that statement was validated, as the director cherry picked clips of that player not moving his feet or coasting or not smiling.
