The plus side is everybody's back. Alright. Will admit, day by day, Tkachuk was giving me vibes that he's ready to move on. Thank goodness he didn't.
The minus is that I can't believe Mark Giordano approved of this deal. The "Giordano, the highest paid player" clause should be ceased to exist to here on.
And it's kind of pressuring to be the highest paid in the team and in the franchise's history as well (Or is it? Correct me if I'm wrong but Iginla's 2005 contract extension with the same figures of $7M AAV for 3 years, when inflated in 2019 figures, is worth more. Sorry if dumb Q.). Here's hoping Tkachuk goes on a strong start unlike 16-17 Gaudreau.
I look forward to knowing which teams were in the mix to offer sheet my favourite Flame.

I don’t know, man. I know he was born in St Louis. I know he just signed a contract that should see him be in Calgary 10 months out of the year.
I also know he is rich enough that he can get the right arrangements in place to make his residence for tax purposes wherever it needs to be if Ontario is in the cards but frickin’ expensive as you lament

At the end of the day the Flames can still move those guys and not lose them for nothing.
At the end of the day if you told me after the Flames got spanked in the playoffs that we would sign Tkachuk to a bridge that still made him the highest paid player, and the only roster moves were swapping Neal and Smith for Lucic and Talbot I would tell you that is a brutal summer.
|
I think Brad tried to prepare us for him bringing back pretty much the same roster.
He talked frequently about how they finished in the regular season. He warned about throwing the baby out with the bath water. He talked about how someone was going to win the Stanley Cup and that team won't bring back the same roster. (To downplay how much roster turnover the Flames were going to have?)

I said he would get.more because of taxes ect. in the other thread and everyone got mad at me.
Point's deal is a massive bargain...less than a mil more than Boeser

I think it's likely that everyone involved realized the cap wasn't available this year to make that kind of deal. So they signed a deal that allows the Flames some flexibility as in there is no pressure to trade anyone off the roster and they can go back to the drawing board in 2 years and ink a big 5-8 year deal.
Maybe a bit of a stretch, but I bet the Flames wanted 6.75 over 3 years, but ended up giving the extra 250k as a sign on good faith. Let's meet in 2 years and get a long term deal done before arbitration hits.
|
I think they were exceptionally close to achieving that. If I had to guess, had Kadri not nixed the trade (extra player would be flipped for around 1.5-2 mil overall cap space), Tkachuk would have agreed to a 6 year deal for around 8 ish soon afterwards. Unfortunately, things fell into place the way they did.

Heres an article from a Pens fan comparing NHL cities, tax rates, etc based on an 11 million dollar contract. Take it with a few grains of salt:
https://thesportsdaily.com/2018/07/1...-the-nhl-p1b1/
I went ahead and graded each city in the NHL by six metrics: previous regular season record/finish, team attendance, after tax income, cost of living, climate, and other intangibles.
I went ahead and graded each city in the NHL by six metrics: previous regular season record/finish, team attendance, after tax income, cost of living, climate, and other intangibles.
5. Calgary Flames
- 2017-2018 Regular Season Record/Finish: 37-35-10 (84 Points; 5th in Pacific)/DNQ for Playoffs
- 2017-2018 Attendance Ranking: 8th
- After Tax Income: $5 million
- Cost of Living: 11th

- Climate:

- Intangibles: The Flames have been kind of dog #### for the past decade; however, things seem to be on the up-and-up for this particular team in Alberta. With a decent team, new arena deal potentially on the horizon, and Canada’s (in terms of NHL teams) best tax rate, Calgary’s definitely not the worst place to play in Canada.
- Grade: B-
and the Oylahz:
12. Edmonton Oilers
- 2017-2018 Regular Season Record/Finish: 36-40-6 (78 Points; 6th in Pacific)/DNQ for Playoffs
- 2017-2018 Attendance Ranking: 13th
- After Tax Income: $5 million
- Cost of Living: 9th

- Climate:

- Intangibles: If Connor McDavid didn’t play here, Edmonton would make Detroit look like La Jolla. Hell, even Gretzky left Edmonton for LA.
- Grade: C

Next three years are officially the "window" with tkachuk and gaudreau expiring after that time.
If we see success I wouldn't be surprised to see the team be able to re-up both for a few years each.
Can someone confirm whether tkachuk is rfa or ufa in 3 years? Because I see people saying both here.

I am glad that Tkachuk gets to have a week before the regular season starts. 1 preseason game isn't enough, but at least it will help knock some of that rust off before the games start to count.

Not blown away by the deal, but SUPER happy to wake up to this news this morning. At least it was done before the end of preseason.
Get Tkachuk on the ice with the boys ASAP and plug him in for Saturday.
Welcome back, Matt.

He lives and works in Alberta for the majority of the year. It's to Alberta he would pay his primary provincial tax, not Ontario.
