I'm sure Auston could have overpowered her if he wanted to. He didn't. He was drunk and did something really dumb but if he had intentions of doing something worse, it would have happened.

IF we're going to assume that he had sexual assault on his mind, why not go all the way and assume he was going to steal the car and murder her too?

He did something dumb but lets not go overboard and think that he was going to rape her.
She *did* call the police. No one suggested that was in *his* mind. It's reasonable to think that for a moment the possibility was in *her* mind -- probably why she insisted in pressing charges. Definitely why it comes across creepy.

Whole lot of people making up a whole lot of things...

English is not my first language, so "mocking an assault" may not be the most precise choice of words. What I wanted to say is that he did it to the guard of his own condo, rather than to some random woman he saw on the street, and it is an important thing to consider. And it is still a stupid and disgusting act nonetheless.
Thanks, understood.

Again, all we know about what Matthews and his friends thought is that whatever they were doing would be funny.

We absolutely agree they had poor judgment but I think that the perception of the guard is much worse than the intent of those guys.

In the police report, it says the officer was dispatched to investigate "a sex crime" and an "assault and public sexual indecency".

In retrospect, many months later, it's easy to say that there was no such intent on the part of Matthews or his friends, but in the moment, that's obviously what she felt was happening.

Right. To an extent.

And the subsequent details they collected basically says he mooned her with boxers still on. No nudity involved based on the report.

Did they even establish during the subsequent conversation that the evidence gathered supports the specific stated reason for dispatching an officer?

No.

In fact none of the allegations have been substantiated at this point. That is what due process is for.

The charge they landed on was disorderly behaviour. We do know that as a fact.

Sounds like some dumb drunken debauchery gone wrong - no big deal, we’ve all been there when we were in our early 20s.

How do you not disclose this to the Leafs until this week?

The Toronto Maple Leafs didn’t know about the allegations against Auston Matthews before you did, and that’s not an insignificant fact.

As a swirl of judgment, moralizing and, yes, a Scottsdale court proceeding engulfs the face of the franchise, the Maple Leafs were caught off-guard by Tuesday’s news that their star centreman was facing a disorderly conduct charge stemming from an incident four months ago in his hometown.

Man, outrage culture to the extreme on here. I'm no fan of Matthews the person (too cocky for my liking), but it's pretty clear to me that he was being a drunk dickwad and just playing a prank. There was no assault, and yes he did scare her and I'm sure he found it funny at the time, but the only reason this is a charge is because him him dropping his pants while going. Sure this shows immaturity, and for that I hope he doesn't get the captaincy, but it was an act of immaturity and even though she voiced that she was scared ####less, and a normal person would apologise, laugh and walk away, he decided to be arrogant and drop his pants inexplicably. But to make it anything more than that when there's no evidence of assault or harassment, is really acting like this guy hurt someone badly. He's arrogant, but lets not make this criminal.

Heard a little bit on the radio today. Guess what they were discussing?

Auston’s wording. How Auston sounded like he was being advised by lawyers. Because apologizing is admitting something and opening the doors to a lawsuit. A litigious society.

How about that.

Too much booze, showing off with friends for laughs usually leads to some amount of stupidity where years later u all laugh and say remember when...
But when you are an athlete, entertainer or really anyone in the public eye u have to be the one that doesn't get caught up in shenanigans.
Mathews went to far and now he will take a hit in the wallet.
Minor slip up of dumb drunk judgement, the opposite of what we see on the ice he has a great demeanor on ice.

Harrassing a female hotel security guard running around in his boxers not the best decision.
Mathews will learn from this.

I'm more outraged by the outrage to the outrage.

I think most people feel the punishment fits the crime here, but are objecting to those who are minimizing what he did with "boys will be boys" garbage.

And the only people who have even hinted at assault, where those trying to minimize his actions, thereby exaggerating the opinions of those they are arguing with.

Whoa, you have to tell your boss this when they just made a multi million dollar investment in you to be the face of the team. Probably could have cooled this whole thing off by the time the season started.

Don’t strain your arm patting yourself on the back for knowing the obvious.

The point is that Mathews should have handled this differently after it happened. Now he is in a #### storm of his own making.

Taking responsibility for your actions shouldn’t be a concept up for debate. He could have done that before this exploded.

Oh come on, it’s clearly a case of drunken shenanigans gone awry. Most of us have done worse without incident. The only reason we are hearing about this is because the security guard knew who he was and obviously saw dollar signs as soon as the incident happened. Dumb move on his part but to be expected for anyone in their early twenties. Please spare us the sanctimony.

Why is it that people who've done stuff like this assume everyone has?
