Point didn't take a discount, and neither did Tkachuk. Tkachuk's contract being marginally higher doesn't mean that Point took a discount. It simply means that Tkachuk's contract is higher.

And yes, I would have liked to have seen (and expected) the number to be lower than $7M on a 3 year deal.

You were pretty absolute, and a day later it was very wrong. That's all. I just find it funny when people speak in absolutes on very fluid situations.

There is another issue, on the tax front, that hasn't come up in this thread yet:

Athletes, because their careers are short, and they won't make those sums of money forever, are allowed to defer some of their income to post-retirement. And of course, they can live anywhere they want at that point.

The differences in taxes are not as great as some here believe.

Tkachuk will get paid a whopping 3.7% more than Point over the next 3 years. And Point gets more up front.

I agree with you, and I generally avoid doing so. And of course, I turned out to be wrong when I did.
