Not a big deal.

It's pretty frustrating as a fan though. The Flames have a limited window here to contend, and it's starting to look like they may be missing Tkachuk and Mangiapane because of contract disputes. They combined for 42 goals last season and are 22 or younger with room to grow still.
So yeah, as a fan who wants this team to do well, get those F-ing contracts signed already FFS.

1) there is no reason to think that their window is 'limited'
2) there is a lot of time before 'they may be missing Tkachuk and Mangiapane'

Veteran fitness testing is on Thursday. I'll be surprised if Mangiapane misses it.

Oh lord. I have a sinking feeling that this thread is going to turn into the Dustin Boyd signing thread. Replete with all the moaning about how the team will miss what he brings to the lineup.
I like the kid, but we have at least 2 guys on PTOs that can replace his production with more size and experience.
The NHL is a tough league to break into. Sweating 200K seems ill advised. I hope he figures this out before main camp starts.

Tkachuk will be signed within the next ten days.
Both sides are well aware of the Nylander clause, and how it effects the terms they are driving towards.
Miss a week of the regular season and any capologist will see the Flames have no room for a $8.5+ contract Nylander'd up.

The frustration seems very premature at this point. Neither have missed any of camp.

Can a player without a contract just show up and expect to participate?

I don’t see why not. Some of the Flames prospects who participate at camp will not have NHL contracts, no?
But I wouldn’t expect it to happen. As I recall from one of Iginla’s contract negotiations he had to pay his own insurance at camp. Mangiapane‘ sage the will insist he not attend without a deal.
