Zero chance the Flames trade Gaudreau this off season. Zero.

Never say never man. Carter/Richard's weren't supposed to go anywhere either.

Makes sense that one likely moves out this summer And that the other gets to the next expansion draft as a pending UFA. I would think Hamonic is more likely to stay on but teams need to be wary of term contracts to defensive style guys like Hamonic.

I actually think it's the other way, Sylvanfan. Guys like Brodie who rely on their skating typically see a real fast drop-off as it deteriorates. But defensive stalwarts like Hamonic with excellent positioning generally keep that hockey sense. Still, Hamonic is a warrior perhaps to a fault -- he's prone to freak injuries because he's always in the right positions to block shots.
Anyway, for the millionth time, keep Hamonic. Keep him! Don't you dare trade him, Treliving!

Until Chris Pronger took issue with them, only way Johnny goes is if Gio has issue with him.

IMO both players are solid top-4 defensemen
Both have one year left on the contract
Both will be looking for long term contracts and the flames don't need either of them long-term.
Both are going to be passed by the flames young depth (hanifin, valkimaki, andersson, Kylington)
Neither are core pieces
Without them, the flames have four top 4 defensemen: Gio, hanifin, valimaki, andersson
Why not trade both? Why not get younger assets back and build some cap flexibility?
Keeping even one of them if they are not going to re-sign is poor asset management given the depth the flames have on the back end. Both are worth more than a first round pick!

Unless they plan on playing Hanifin on his off-side, they'd do well to keep one of their other right-side top-four defensemen. Besides, having three U22 defenders in a top-four isn't always a recipe for success.
Giordano - Andersson
Hanifin - Hamonic
Valimaki - Stone
It makes too much sense. Three LD, three RD.

It went much much deeper than Pronger. Much.
Pronger was certainly in the "right" as well. Those two guys were tearing apart that room with their behaviour in and outside the team.
Holmgren has no option than to jettison them...it was that bad.

I don't think I would. But in a world were they are trading Brodie or Hamonic, I am closer to 50/50 on it. I had my torch and pitchfork to run Brodie out of town. But now I think I'm indifferent, crazy at that may be.

Both are UFA in the coming season so I suppose it's not a slam dunk that either player re-signs with the Flames if they aren't traded. Hamonic is probably going to be looking for a raise on his next deal and while I think he's a solid defenseman he's not outstanding at anything so I would be weary of overpaying him although I feel he's the kind of player that could be serviceable into his 30's because of the style he plays. Brodie may want to go back east as that's where his and his wife's family reside. I suppose we all knew a few years back it would come to this with Brodie, Hamonic, and Stone all set to become UFA that only one would likely be retained from the three and Stone for sure won't be back which leaves one of Brodie or Hamonic. Like I said before I would be really surprised if they trade Hamonic given what they paid to acquire him but I suppose if they get a 1st round pick back it would soften the blow although it's doubtful they get as high as 1st back as the one they gave the Islanders.

I'm 99/1 in favor of trading the defenseman with more on ice brain farts than Donald Trumps lies. And I don't even have to name him

Have you heard BT and Conroy talk about him after this season? He is not going anywhere.

I would move Hamonic before Brodie.
Either or both for the right return.

You want to ship one of the most dynamic players in the game coming off a 99 point season? You won't get the value back and it will sting when he helps the Flyers hoist a Cup.

Extend Hamonic. If anyone is going to take a hometown discount it’s him.
I like Brodie but we have more players to backfill what he brings I believe. I think Andersson and Valimaki are going to be legit top 4 options and Kylington has potential too.
Who replaces Hamonic if we move him? Look how much it cost to bring him in.

Yes, trade high...he's a small, soft player but his skill level should fetch a good return...
How many points did he get in this year's playoffs?
(Answer: 1 point in 5 games.)
This team needs 2 centers that can do it all. They don't have any right now.
Maybe they can trade him and whoever else it takes to get at least one.

If you trade Gaudreau, you're declaring the window to contend has closed.

You can't say it is closed after such a trade without knowing what you received back in return. But you could be saying the window wasn't open with the club as it was currently constructed.
But I'm not in favor of shopping Gaudreau as I believe the odds of him figuring out the NHL playoffs are better than winning a trade with him involved.

Have to agree with Strange Brew, can't say anything without knowing what the Flames would get back. What if he's moved to the Rangers for Mika Zibanejad, Lias Andersson and a pick? You lose the most talented player but you gain another core piece that makes the center depth of Zibanejad, Monahan, Backlund and Ryan very interesting. Windows remain open.
Say this though, if the Flames don't make hay in the upcoming season they should look at moving Gaudreau during the off season. Next summer he'll have two years left without any clause restricting his movement. Summer 2021? He's a pending UFA with a tight five team trade list.
