The Flames missed out on Forsberg. Chicago traded him to Carolina. Too bad.

I don’t think it’s too bad. Forsberg has never really impressed me

For the NHL club? No thanks. I would be much more comfortable spending a little more money for more experience and proven ability.

Varlamov, Talbot, Mrazek, Lehner (unlikely as I think he sticks with the isles).
Via trade options are even more limited. You're looking at Allen or maybe Quick.

Talbot is a good goalie...he got the Oilers of all teams to the 2nd round of the playoffs

Yeah he's better than he's shown the last 2 years. I'll give anyone a pass for how they look behind the Oilers D, especially once I heard he was having problems away from the rink that are now resolved. He gets my vote, especially since we have Rittich and wouldn't have to ride him as hard as Edmonton did

I am all for Talbot, and I don't think he is going to be commanding a big contract either. He is essentially a cast-away from Edmonton of all places, and didn't have a spot in Philly either.
As for Parsons, his timeline might surprise some on this board. Of course you can't pencil him into the lineup this year, but it wouldn't shock me to have him recalled during the year to fill-in and do better than what most people think he would do. Parsons is an elite goalie prospect that got hampered last season with injuries. I really believe in this kid to succeed. He isn't Irving. Parsons has that 'fire' inside of him like Kipper did, like Vernon did, and like a lot of other really great goaltenders - that fire to get up and scramble to save that impossible second and third shot. His positioning seems sound, and he just has that way of making multiple stops and never giving up on the puck. I would never put my money on a goalie prospect making it, but he comes as close to it as possible for me.
Allen I would stay away from. He really is Elliott part deux - damn near elite when he is 'on', but somehow that switch accidentally goes into the off position and takes forever in coming back on. No thanks. Give me an unspectacular but reliable average goaltender over that any day. Why waste any assets? I would 100% do a Neal - Allen trade, however, since the buyout is cheaper.

I can't see Mike Smith getting anything more than a training camp PTO to be honest.

Varlamov used to be all world vezina material. Howd he fall off the cliff so much. If we are going to take a flyer thats my pick. Assuming salary asks are somewhat comparable between him and Talbot.

They won’t be close to similar. Varlamov will cost a lot more than Talbot.

If thats the case so be it but id still be inclined to lean Varlamovs way. Hes shown he can be a number one for several years, Talbot had one.

Made me snort my drink!
I suppose for better or for worse, the Flames let Smith play out of his half-a-season long funk. The Oilers would have never given him that opportunity to build his game back.

Phfft! Shows what you know about drafting 1st overall. A half-a-season funk is money in the bank in oiltown!
