I vividly recall Brodie doing this exact move against a Dallas player a while back. Probably Seguin. No penalty and no penalty shot on that play.

Because that ref seemed to actually know the rule. Hooking is one of the most basic NHL rules - bush league.

Default Flames chow down on some Wings 5-3

I could be wrong but I thought the rule is that any chops to the top of the stick is considered slashing. You could tie him up from the top but if you’re chopping it’s a no go.

I think the only acceptable play is a stick lift.

Also with that being said I thought that they waive it off if he gets the shot off too...who knows anymore. Most inconsistent reffing

The call was hooking.

Literally a penalty shot awarded for playing defense.

The only defensible call would be slashing (on the stick) but they never call that unless the stick breaks (which is kinda stupid but that's another discussion).

There's no way it's hooking. The only explanation is that the ref thought he got into the arm.

Or called if the guy drops his stick. That drives me nuts.

My novice coach taped my gloves to my stick to encourage me having a good hold on it. We would laugh if you could knock a guy’s stick out of his hands

Huge win, Smith looked good at times. Surprised it wasnt a little more chippy based on the crap they pulled last year

And just to be clear in no way am I saying he redeemed himself tonight for his play this season. The first thing I thought of when I saw this picture was that he looked like he could be a character in RDR2.

The funny thing is that he actually got a quality shot off so the penalty shot call is doubly baffling.

In the last two Flames games I've been baffled by the extremely poor quality of officiating.

Nice to see a solid game from Smith--three goals against, but not one his fault.

And that Kylington defensive play was totally clean. At the same time, don't like how deep he was in the offensive zone that caused him to have to chase defensively...partly why I think an experienced D for the bottom pairing with Andersson would be a good idea down the stretch. Nevertheless, Kylington deserves major props for the way he played that because it was completely foul-free.

It's the kind of bad and obvious call they should go out tomorrow and say the wrong call was made. It's pretty definitive, I don't think there's even a debate in this case.

NHL admit a wrong call? Haha.

I don’t know if that’s the correct interpretation of the rule or not, but I wonder if that was the call on Kylington
That's exactly what I was taught growing up, but I looked up the rule as Scroopy Noopers posted, and doesn't seem to be the case.

Oh get this- sportsnet performers of the night: Pettersson- fair enough, hat trick, including OT winner . Embid (sure, I don’t watch much NBA) and.... Conor McDavid for his 3 point night- one of which was an empty net goal. How many points did Johnny and Lindholm have tonight? Is this because E=NG managed to stop a six game losing streak? **** off spotsnet.

I’m okay with Calgary being under appreciated and under dogs. In fact I prefer it that way.

The league is starting to recognize that this team on most nights is no longer the underdog. The words: "elite" and "contender" are being thrown around pretty commonly. I don't know about you but I am proud the league views us this way. We have been viewed as underdogs and mediocre for as long as we can remember. We should revel in the fact that for once, other fans around the league think highly of the Calgary Flames.
