Just watched the Flames interview with Button at the combine released today. Interviewed 74 players none of the projected top players because they had no chance at them.

That's a deep interview list. And impressive. Scouting staff has been top notch since the departure of Daryl Sutter. Can't wait to see who the drum up and nab this year.

Hopefully a Veleno-like fall.

Podkolzin might be the real wild card in this draft. I mean pure logic dictates he cannot possibly slip any further than maybe 15. But STL picked up Kostin at 30. He was ranked mid-high 1st round IIRC.

Guys like Brink, Kaliev, Knight and Lavoie are all over the map. So they could drop too. Or go much higher. This draft is a wild card. At least how I am seeing it.

There's always one guy that slips through the cracks, so I am hoping the Flames just sit on their hands until that said player becomes available.

For anyone interested the NHL is posting the top 25 for each fitness test at the combine here:
https://link.nhl.com/centralscouting/public/

Also Corey Pronman is tweeting out some official height measurements.

I wrote an article ten years ago for the Forecaster that looked at central scouting rankings and where the player went.

Two things jumped out.

Players that slide slide for a reason, and the team taking them usually regrets it.

And ... the Oilers were the team that took the sliding guy more often than not in that time range.

So grabbing that guy that falls may not be the best idea, or ... no matter who the Oilers take they don't pan out!

Man, listening to Spencer Knight in that post combine interview makes me want the Flames to draft him. Doubt he gets to 26 honestly.

Interesting that Bobbie Brink is only 5’8.25” tall.

Not having followed Spencer Knight that much, what iw the biggest reason everybody is so high on him? His Stats look above average but not generational.

I'm leaning towards Brink and Leason, moreso Brink. If the Flames do trade down, I think Leason would be more likely to still be there. Would remind me a bit when the Kings took Pearson a few years ago.

This is Leason's 3rd time through the draft, I just don't see a guy with much of a ceiling. I think he will play in the league, but at best he will be a bottom 6 guy.

I wouldn't use a 1st on him and I think there are much better players available early in the 2nd. For me Leason is a late 2nd/3rd round pick.

The argument FOR Leason is he's 20, and he's pretty close to what he's gonna be. There's not a lot of guesswork for scouts to do to project him, particularly compared to some of the other guys in the draft where you have to try to project them through two more years of development.

How I would gauge Leason is to look at the last World Juniors where he played along with other prospects who are the same age as him. Although it was an extremely short sample size, I thought he was one of Canada’s best players in the same age category. He played in all situations, had decent speed for a big man, and was able to put up points.

Even though he was passed up the last couple of drafts, his improvement from last year to this year has been massive and I wouldn’t be opposed to seeing the Flames pick him up. And there would be a chance he would be available with an early second round pick, so we could potentially move back a few spots to gain another pick all the while getting a promising player.

Not every players path is going to be the same. I wouldnt worry too much if Leason was taken at 26. He has a good skillset and great size. His flaw has always been skating and that can be fixed. In fact his improved greatly over the last year if I read the stories correctly.

Harrison Blaisdell. His dad Mike was a first round pick of the Redwing's, 1980 if I recall correctly. His grandpa Wally Blaisdell was also a player. Harrison looks to be better than both of them. Lives for the game. Great skill set. Good wheels. But he is NCAA bound. If we sneak into the second round with a trade, I would be thrilled to get this kid.

I’m starting to warm up to a few players. Spencer Knight, Ryan Johnson, Raphael Lavoie and Simon Holmstrom are the players I’ve randomly decided to be excited for.

Future Considerations is awesome as always. Thanks for the discount again this year!
