Consider all you want, even if they consider selling they have to offer it to a local group first before Houston ever becomes an option and I am beyond certain some group of people would step forward to keep the team in Calgary. The Flames are not going anywhere.

It's definitely something that could permeate throughout the lineup if it is not corrected, but I have a hard time believing players like Giordano, Gaudreau, and Tkachuk (the latter two have won and dominated at every level) are part of the issue.

I would have still taken a first round sweep for the sole reason that the Oil will not be in the playoffs.

My question is just...who?
Who would privately finance a new arena, and buy the team rather than buy the team and move it to Houston?
Houston is a huge, huge market.
Calgary is a small market in a city that is struggling and shrinking economically.

How do you figure that they have to offer it to a local group first?
The conditions of sale are set by the owner in conjunction with the league, its not in the league bylaws.
And I can't see any local group stepping forward without the prospect of a new arena being part of the package.
Especially since the team is barely profitable and that seems to be sliding year by year.
The Flames would be free currently to listen to any offer and accept any offer that they want.
The only way I could see a local group being successful is if they outbid an offer from a out of town bidder.

There was a rumour that the Shaw family was interested but that was before Jim Shaw passed away.
Difficult to think of an individual, group or company that would be interested given the current state of affairs both with the franchise and the local economy generally.

Wow this thread.
Not only am I sad about the Flames, but now, given the state of Calgary, I think I’m actually depressed

Don’t be. Winnipeg got a team about 60 years after their heyday.
IMO flames stay here because team owners prefer expansion fee windfalls

Hopefully after the season is over a couple of owners come out publicly and say they have no interest in moving the team.
Problem with this organization is when was the last time they have said anything publicly other than through their mouthpiece King?

Given that three of five owners are in their late 70s/early 80s, I would argue that part of the arena quest is securing revenue certainty so those parties can cash out. If you have secure revenues, it's easier to valuate a franchise.

Do you think king isn’t speaking for the owners?
I’d think he would be fired by now if that were the case, no?

You answered your own question.
King is the owners talking. Not sure what else you expect...that's his role in the CSEC.

My point was that it would be refreshing to hear from an owner or two directly but obviously that’s what King is there for.

The mandate by the NHL has always been to keep franchises where they are. A couple other things are also factors. It is in the best interest of the NHL to expand to Houston rather than a relocation. The reason Bettman is pushing a new arena so hard is because he knows the market and knows they can make more money with a new arena. Expansion keeps the Flames making money as well as all the revenue from a new franchise. The Battle Of Alberta will pick up again and that is profitable for the NHL. I have seen nothing that says the Flames are losing money and until that happens I can't see the NHL wanting to re-locate the team. It also would look terrible on the NHL to go to the wall for a team like Arizona to keep them there while letting the Flames just up and walk from Calgary, especially when the team is still profitable. There are plenty of successful businessmen in Canada that would jump at a chance to own a Canadian team, I have no doubt about that. I have zero doubt at some point after the olympic bid is over the two sides will negotiate again and an arena deal will eventually get done.

Flames have been outscored 8-2 in the second period the last two “must win” games.
Those first intermission coaching adjustments working well for Gully & Co...
