It has value. My wife's step brother earned his full degree at Harvard and went on to play in the AHL before going to Europe to play into his 30s. When he came back to Canada, he got a job in his field almost immediately. I think there is favouritism though because he played hockey. For a regular person, it might not be as easy.

Also, you have to consider that he might not end up having a long career. Most prospects don't make it, so hedging his bets could be a good move.

Good lord, NO.

While neither Fox nor Daniels can marshal a Harvard degree directly into a successful psychiatric practice, it sure as hell provides significant priority for entrance into an elite level graduate programme that will—provided they have the grades.

So you’re saying my online degree from University of School is worthless?

Not if you’re low on tp.

Obviously.

My point is mainly that these guys just want to play hockey because that is their passion and the degree is not the biggest thing on their mind.

I used Sydney Daniels as an example because she's smart as hell and could pursue any career she wants but she's happy playing hockey and making a small salary while doing so.

One extra year of college isn't going to hurt Fox but staying another two years might see him stagnate in his game. Is that a risk he's willing to take for a Harvard degree? I don't think so personally. But I do think that the bigger clincher would be picking exactly where he wants to play as a UFA.

In the end I bet he signs with the Flames this time next year.

I have a feeling he'd be a reverse-Brodie in the sense that he's right handed, but would fare better when put on the left side.

-More OZ deployment than DZ deployment, plus usage on PP
-Better breakout passing angles
-Better shooting angles
-Better range on outside poke check

The prestige may mean more than salary or practicability. You don't get into the ivy leagues without having worked your ass off for most of your life, it's not like the University of Calgary who have a third of every local graduating high school class in on Early Admission. That piece of paper from Harvard is proof of the time you put in relative to... basically the whole continent.

I never understand this reasoning. Can someone explain?

CHL
You have 2 years to sign a player drafted. If undrafted second time, they are UFA. After 4 years they can become a UFA, regardless.

NCAA
You have 4 years to sign a college player until they become a UFA.

What exactly is the loophole?
You retain rights for 4 years instead of 2 initially, and both players are UFA eligible after 4 years.

Because you can’t sign them and have them continue in college, whereas that is what often occurs with junior players.

Agree or not, that seems to play a part in why junior players almost never refuse to sign for 4 years, where it is not all that uncommon for college players.

The Flames have a few guys playing in the CHL, as do most teams. If a college player signs with an NHL team he can't go back to play college.

It really isn't a loophole and it is not that big of a problem for the NHL either.

There are maybe on average 1 or 2 players a year that go the UFA route after being drafted by refusing to sign with their respective drafting team (and there are some recent examples of where it is the drafting team's fault they didn't sign).

A lot more go unsigned because their drafting teams don't offer them a contract.

Yeah it hurts when a good prospect decides they don't want to be part of your team but frankly I don't think it is a big enough issue for the NHL to care about.

Is it that hard to see.

What value does a CHL player get from staying beyond 2 years?nthey go back in the random draft and wait 2 more years to be UFA except a CHL player is done at 20 not 22+ like NCAA

An NCAA player gets the benefit of a degree (in Fox’s case Ivy League) and then pick their team of choice

How much value does it have if your NHL plans don't go as expected?
