Overall I'm happy to see the Flames didn't misconstrue their situation. They are a borderline playoff team, so it doesn't make sense to go for a big splash unless you can land a core piece. Hoffman was the only one potentially available who made sense. Very reminiscent of the deadline where our "big moves" were Brett Carson and Freddy Modin.

That said, it's a bit disappointing that this is the situation we find ourselves in after going all-in during the offseason. Hopefully fixing the RW mess is a priority this summer.

Edit: regarding Stajan, he'll get enough games to reach 1000 just as a way of saying thanks, and probably no more than that. Matt Stajan is a nice guy but absolutely not a player who gets guaranteed icetime on a team with playoff aspirations.

I agree he's been a lot better. But "never go to the stands" seems like an overstatement. Firstly because it's happened already, so there's not some unwritten rule about Stajan and secondly because the new guys are going to need a shot. Assuming Ferland's out they still have to sit Brouwer, Hathaway, Stajan or Lazar. Let's assume it's Garnet. When Ferland's back, two have to be out, and that's where I think Stajan might get a seat. The thrid reason is just because of wear and tear - he got hit hard last game and gets hit a lot in general.

Lovely, he can hang out with them in the room as a healthy scratch before and after the game.

Also the players don’t dictate who plays.

They’re not going to be turning in their jerseys to gulutzan a la “Rudy” inssiting that Matt plays.

Right, but I think Stajan will need to revert to his Oct-Dec form to go back to the PB. And I'm getting this weird feeling (reverting excluded) that they would like to get Stajan his 1,000 games and silver stick if they can help it.

The gel man dictates who plays.

Forgot about that. I'm sure that's a consideration. The thing is - who sits? IMO Lazar has improved just as much.

Neither do fans.

How are we a borderline team when the top two spots in our division are still up for grabs?

Hathaway. He's been fighting his own talent for a good 2 weeks.

Haha. No evidence of this yet.
Yes they do or he wouldn't be making $3.3M. GMs are not stupid.

You’re right. General managers don’t make mistakes. Stajan is really earning that contract, proving the gm (Burke at the time) right.

You're seriously asking why a team embroiled in a dogfight for the 2nd wildcard spot might be considered a borderline playoff team?

By my count, they're one of seven teams competing for four playoff spots, including two divisional seeds. (Eight and five, if you're not sold on Minnesota.)

That's still borderline territory, but you make it sound as if the 2nd wild card was the only spot they had any chance of taking.

Lots of fans like Stajan just fine, because they recognize what he has brought and what he still contributes.

Yes, but he resigned. He must be doing something right.
I just don't see Flames Coaching sitting some guy whose played 53 games in the heat of a playoff push.

Yeah, but I was more talking about after Ferland comes back. They need two sitters.

He signed in 2014-2015. His play has regressed. If shore can win faceoffs and not skate around aimlessly with one hand on his stick, and avoid icing it twice a game, the coaching staff will put him in Stajans spot.

Point being, the coaches will do what’s best for the team, not keep Stajan in the lineup because some teammates like him
