Because if it's the latter it simply isnt true.
He does not rank ahead of

Monahan
Backlund
Arguable he'd rank ahead of Tkachuk or Frolik either

He'd be very much above Frolik lol

All the key pieces that we will compete with are likely already in place. We likely aren’t going to have any prospects come in and replace important players and actually improve upon them at this stage.
We’re set to contend now, and there’s not a huge gap between us and the top teams as-is. Adding another top end forward like Kane/Simmonds effectively addresses the only real remaining hole on the playing roster.
It’s time to go for it.

I very much doubt that they brought in Smith as a cup winning goalie even though he has performed well. I also think they figured Hamilton, Johnny and Monahan are still a year or two from peak form.
But if you really think this is the year, I am still not very confident Kane is the guy that puts you over the top.

That's good and fair, but the goal shouldn't be to go out and trade a ton of assets to try and compete for this year only. The goal should be to try and be a contender for the Cup for many seasons.
I don't think trading assets for Evander Kane helps to achieve that goal. In fact, I think he's a detriment to it. I haven't seen Evander Kane actually make a team better.

That doesn't really make sense. Brad got the best goalie he possibly could. You really think he got Smith thinking "meh, this guy can't get it done for us if we're going for it, but I'm not really going for it yet"?

I'm not down with the idea of a rental either. I don't think spending significant assets for a few months of "help" (it rarely actually does that) is a wise move. I'd want who we acquire to either be extended, or have term left on his deal.
I think in this first focused window, this year and next, the roster has one hole. It's another scoring winger, and I think it's time to push on that front.

I think he got the best goalie he could but the real plan is Gillies/Parsons in 1-3 years.

I am all aboard this hype train. If James Neal isn't available I think Evander Kane is your next best option.

Neal might re-sign in Vegas, especially if they get into the playoffs and make a bit of noise. Certainly not giving one of their best goal scorers if they are fighting for the division lead.
Evander is younger, but will also cost a premium. I've been nosing around the Kane thread in HF and Buffalo fans seem interested in our young dmen prospects, particularly Rasmus. Their blueline will need someone to step up on the bottom pairing next season in place of Gorges. Currently they have Falk on the bottom pairing with him, but he's no spring chicken anymore either and he's also a lefty.
One fan also acknowledged that they wouldn't be asking for two of Andersson and Kylington/Valimaki/Fox without something else really shiny coming back to the Flames in return. In particular Fox, because then we'd have zero high end RHD prospects in the pipeline.

Do they also understand the salary problems? Would they take on Brouwer? The only other way to do it is with Backlund and then it gets really complicated.
This just seems to me like a lot of risk and expense for the limited reward.

Taking a while to get to 5000

Well, if the Flames do add a player (Kane or otherwise) I hope it happens sooner rather than later. Rentals don't work when they come in with only 4-6 weeks to get up to speed before the playoffs. You'd think its plenty of time, but it just doesn't seem to be. Not to me at least. Get a guy in now, give them twice that time.

You know, I would be more interested in trading Brodie then any of Anderson/Valimaki/Fox personally. I'm pretty excited for all of them and cheap deal RFAs on D are going to free up alot of cap in the future. So for me it's Brodie or Kylington as the corner piece of the deal. Brodie is a good value, young guy with a couple years left on his contract, Kylington lots of potential upside but more dispensable then the other D prospects, in my opinion.

There's no "real plan". Brad has had a very distinct plan in building a contender since he got here. If his actual plan was for Gillies or Parsons to become an strong/elite #1 NHL goalie and THEN we're a contender then he'd be foolish, which he isn't.
He gave up assets to acquire Mike Smith at the same time as he was giving up other assets to start going all in on this club. He believes Mike Smith is a Cup caliber goalie and believes the team's time is starting now.
To think he believes the team's time is when/if a goalie prospect turns to gold is silly, imo. The chances of one of our prospects being better than Mike Smith is now is really low. That's the nature of goalie prospects.

I am quite certain that his plan does not involve trading away major assets for a rental player, thereby snapping the team's window shut after only one season.

Sure, were you just piggybacking off my post or actually replying to me? I don't think I suggested anything to warrant that response.

I was mostly piggybacking, and replying to the people who are suggesting silly things like trading Hamilton. Sorry for leaving that unclear.

Another strong night for Kane. You know he wouldn't make our pp any worse.

Probably was the exact same posters. "We don't need Radulov." "He'll be a locker room distraction." "He doesn't fit my arbitrary, completely untested self serving definition of a winning hockey player."
Meanwhile he steps into Montreal and immediately establishes as a highly effective top six player.

What the hell? I'm in the ‘no’ camp because it doesn't make any sense to go all-in for this season at the expense of closing the team's window immediately. A loony move like trading Hamilton for Kane would do just that. I never said anything about Radulov at any time that I can recall.
