Over the past 2 seasons, Barey/Goins combined for -0.4 WAR in 1323 PA. Diaz/Solarte combined for 6.8 WAR in 1716 PA. That's... a lot better!

On paper at least, it's a huge improvement on the infield depth.

So nice to look at the Jays depth chart now and not see Goins and Barney there.
Hopefully some young players step up this year, especially in the OF.
Still need to add a starter or two though, like solid bottom of the rotation type guys and it'd sure be nice if the DH wasn't a slow useless plug like Kendrys.
RF - Hernandez (R)
3B - Donaldson (R)
1B - Smoak (S)
DH - Morales (S)
LF - Pearce (R)
2B - Solarte (S)
SS - Tulowitzki (R)
C - Martin (R)
CF - Pillar (R)
IF - Travis (R)
IF - Diaz (R)
OF - Carrera (L)
C - Maile (R)
IF Callups - Ngoepe, Urena, Gurriel, Tellez (1B)
OF Callups - Alford, Pompey, Smith Jr, Ramirez, Fields
C Callups - Jansen, McGuire
SP - Stroman
SP - Happ
SP - Estrada
SP - Sanchez
SP - Biagini
SP Callups - Rowley, McGuire, Santos, Borucki, Guerreri
CP - Osuna
RP - Barnes
RP - Tepera
RP - Leone
RP - Ramirez
RP - Loup (L)
RP - Dermody (L)
RP Callups - Muran, Mayza (L), Girodo
Would love to see a couple pitchers surprise in spring training and push their way up the ladder. Guys like Borucki, Perdomo, Pearson etc.

I like the move as well. In an odd way, I think it's also a poor mans contingency for Donaldson (and maybe that puts a little tension on Donaldson to sign). I'm not against a move like this because it's an upgrade on the hole at 2nd when inevitably Travis gets injured, but I really think if they don't rebuild, they have to bring in a couple stars to compete with the Yanks and Sox. That's stating the obvious, but I do think while think is an incremental upgrade, larger moves need to be done in the OF. I'm fine with Tulo at SS as I do think there should be a turnaround at some point in his game.
As for Guerrero Jr., the publications I've read say that both him and Bichette at earliest will arrive at the end of this upcoming season potentially as a September callup. I'm fine with them consistently killing it in the minors. Building that confidence can have a great impact on their future careers, so IMO there's no point rushing them or giving them their cup of tea in the majors.

The chances of Donaldson re-signing in Toronto are miniscule and a signing like this doesn't put any pressure on him either way.
Also, not to be too negative but I don't believe we'll see this organization legitimately attempt to go star to star against the Yankees and Red Sox. We had a two year period where the stars aligned and we were able to go all in while the Sox and Yankees were dormant, to which we went about 80% in the first year and 70% in the next and thankfully got two amazing runs out of it.
They won't spend asset and money wise with those guys when they're in contending status. Unfortunately, they also won't rebuild either. We'll likely be what we've been for the better part of 20+ years.

There are multiple reports that the Toronto Blue Jays have signed star third baseman Josh Donaldson to a one-year, US$23-million contract.

I am not too familiar with contract situations in baseball. Does a 1 year deal basically spell the end of Donaldson era in Toronto?

This simply avoids arbitration. They can still negotiate a long-term deal with him. Given that it's a record high for arbitration I think that's a good sign as it's a sign of good faith to kick off the long-term negotiation.

They've also signed Loup (1.8) and Carrera (1.9) to one year deals.
Brings the Jays total payroll up to about $125 million, this includes Gurriel.
Key names left to sign are Stroman, Osuna, and Pillar.
The rest are pre-arb and won't cost much. Guys like Biagini, Hernandez, Leone, etc.

I guess they've also signed Pillar ($3.25 million) and Leone ($1.085 million).
Osuna and Stroman going to arbitration it looks like.

Marcus Stroman, Blue Jays: Stroman filed at $6.9MM, Toronto countered at $6.5MM (per Bob Nightengale of USA Today, via Twitter)
Roberto Osuna, Blue Jays: Osuna filed at $5.8MM, Toronto countered at $5.3MM (per Heyman, via Twitter)

So if you take the existing payroll, add the max for Stroman and Osuna, then use $750k average for the pre-arb guys left unsigned (Tepera, Ramirez, Barnes, Biagini, Dermody, Maile, Diaz and Hernandez) that brings the total payroll to about $147,000,000.
Leaves them about $15-20 million if they go with the same opening day payroll as last year.

The only way that they are relevant this year, is if they play the outfield with pillar in the middle, and then hope to win the lottery with a huge season by any one of alford, smith, hernandez or gurriel. If they bring in an old middling bat for the outfield, the season is over before it starts.
Spend the money on trying to land arrieta or darvish.

In typical new Jays management style, they've signed Curtis Granderson to a 1 year $5MM deal. This isn't the same player of his Yankees heyday. .212 avg is something to definitely be concerned about. What's the best that can possibly come from signing a has-been? These guys rarely turn it around and even if they do, how good are they for? Very similar to the Pearce signing last year.
Make a deal to upgrade or sign a marquee guy. Enough of this nonsense.
