solid trade...i'd rather had a 1st, 2nd and a 3rd instead of having the 4th coming back...

that said, this is a really solid move. absolutely solidifies our top 4... if we can resign Stone too, that would be amazing...

if Hamonic was available, makes you wonder why the Oilers didn't do that rather than getting Strome?

I mean I'm glad they didn't! but just another in a long line of odd Oiler moves...

@DimFilipovic: After spending all of last year dragging around Dennis Wideman, Michael Stone and Deryk Engelland I imagine TJ Brodie is a fan of this move.

Look how much Hamilton makes. Hamonic makes 3.8. That's value.

Because they gave up 3 draft picks? not actual developing prospects. WTF

Bear in mind Hamonic'a contract is really good as opposed to what Stone might ask for.

It worries me that we'll have a sizable gap in the prospect pool after no second or third this year, no first or second next year, and probably no second the year after. Hopefully we can get a few assets at the deadline.
You have to pay for good top 4 guys though, so I guess I'm pretty happy we didn't lose any of our top prospects.

Which is how it should be.

Then the next step in the contender ride is to hopefully get to Pittsburgh/Chicago level where you start getting draft picks while contending due to having positions solidified and your prospects get overrated and coveted by the league because they're overachieving on a team that's easy to play for.

Just because we underpaid for Hamilton because Sweeney got pressured by his bosses doesn't mean this is automatically an overpayment.

I'd say this is closer to market value than the Hamilton deal was. Particularly because Hamonic is on a pretty nice contract for a top 4 defenseman.

Maybe on the forward front a little but our D cupboard and goalie cupboard are near the best in the league.

I will consider open when they address that elusive hole on right wing.

Don't really like giving up the first but this signals that the window is opening...so filling that rw spot remains even more important. How much cap space left?

More involved in the deal

Elliotte Friedman‏ @FriedgeHNIC
Told Hamonic deal "is complicated," so forgive me if inexact. But sounds like NYI is getting a first and two seconds. NYI will send a 4th

Never mind the fact that they are at least a year away which lowers their value significantly. I'd call this a homerun trade for us.

Wow.

The difference between this and Hamilton deal is that Dougie was due for a big raise. Hamonic is already under contract (at a good cap hit).

Don't see Stone re-signing for #5 money but...

Ill take it but I hope we can recoup these picks at some point, especially with next years draft being much better than this year
