I'm actually OK with Wideman as a 5-6 specialist. I could also see a contender looking to add him for added offense from the back end, especially if the Flames retain salary.

I"m predicting Wideman to the pens in the next 2 days.

Stone hurt his knee late last season, March 26th. He wasn't on skates for four months during this time and was still rehabbing it leading into training camp last fall, six months post injury. So to say his mobility and season took a major shot in the arm would be an understatement. Prior to this year he was a legit top four guy, 25 years old with nothing but upside. That knee injury truly set him back.

Hoping he returns to form and the Flames can sign him after the expansion draft. Stone's definitely having a bad year but if he shows signs while wearing out jersey I hope we get something worked out.

Don't recall Stone as anything special, but the price seems fair for the circumstances so... What ever I guess?

Certainly don't mind this kind of move in theory, but of course if we don't make the playoffs and he just walks at the end of the season, it still ends up being a waste of a pick.

Wait and see I guess. Maybe I'll warm up to it more after I see him play for the Flames.

Wotherspoon is about 10th down the depth chart now so I doubt it'll be an issue.

It'd also be wrong.

I'd say his mobility and season actually took a major shot in the leg.

Because of the thing with my buddy's house (see above) I watched Stone a lot last time they played the Yotes. All I saw was him holding guys all night. Not very impressive.

His minutes regressed into a 3rd pairing demotion, he has hit the press box already this season for poor play (and would have seen it more if the team had better depth) and the recent interview where Treliving said that Dennis was giving them the best he can. Said with more than a hint of disappointment. Hardly a vote of confidence from the GM that likely echoes the coach's thoughts too.

I'd say the last two signings say more about Treliving's opinion of Kulak and Jokipakka (and probably Spoon) than Wideman.

I wouldn't right off Wideman just yet, but as someone said this could test Gultuzan's left-right pairing issue

Giordano - Hamilton
Brodie - Stone

Lefties
Bartkowski
Jokipakka

Righties
Engelland
Wideman

Almost looks like Bartkowski is in, and they dress play one of Engelland or Wideman

What are you waiting for to write off Wideman?

Four terrible seasons as a Flame out of five isn't good enough for you?

Sometimes you need to take a risk. The 3rd round pick might turn into something 5-6 years down the road, but I think if your team is this close to the playoffs you help them out and if you do it without giving up much, awesome. This team needs some playoff experience.

I think bingo is saying don't write him off the roster just yet, which I think is correct as well.

I think Wideman plays out his contract with the flames.

Analytics bloggers at FN don't love the trade. Call him == to Wideman at best.

Flames won't be changing who they protect based on a UFA d-man.
You have summed it up perfectly. We dont have to protect him since UFA. Vegas has a few days extra to sign him but he does not have to go there. If we does sign in Vegas we essentially give up a 3rd rounder in the expansion draft as that then becomes the Flames selection by Vegas.

With wife from Calgary, not likely.

Highly like we get a number 4 defenseman without using an expansion spot.

Now do they protect Ferland or go after that 1RW with the last forward spot remaining. I only see Monahan, Gaudreau, Frolik, Backlund, Bennett. I dont think they protect Brouwer. Do not see the cap space for this unless they move Wideman somehow?

Or do they go after that number 1 goalie since also have a goalie spot for a UFA goalie. Scott Darling-Chicago seems the best target especially at his cap hit. Also a UFA. Chicago wont sign him before expansion draft because cannot protect him since Crawford has NMC.

"Obviously, I know Stoney real well,'' says the broker of the deal, GM Brad Treliving, a part of the management crew that brought the 6-foot-3, 200-pounder to the Arizona desert in the first place.

"Mike's a big defenceman, can move a puck, has a great shot, and he's a right-handed shot.

"Mike had a tough end to last season, needed knee surgery and those are hard to come back from. So his year's probably been a little up and down.

"But I think he's going to give us some stability.

"This is a player who can do a lot of things. Because of his shot he can give you secondary powerplay time, kill penalties, play 5-on-5.

He's projected by more than a few GM-wannabes to slot in as a top-4 along the Calgary blueline.

"He's got the ability to play minutes,'' replies Treliving. "In Phoenix he played with (Oliver) Ekman-Larsson, he played with (Keith Yandle). He can withstand 20-plus minutes a night.

"How, where and with whom, those are things the coaches will burn the midnight oil on.

"We just want him to come in and fit in. I told him: 'You're not here to save us. You're here to join what I think will be a good defensive group.'"
