Yes, he is wrong. The Flames are still a work in progress with a lot of young players still learning how to play a disciplined game of strong puck support in the best league in the world. Against possession monsters like the Sharks, of course they are going to still look like a less dominant team, but I thought they were fine tonight—not great, but certainly not bad.
The bottom line is that they look VASTLY improved on last season, and there have been numerous times this season in which the Flames appear to be on the cusp of joining the NHL's top teams. It's not a finished product yet, but it is definitely coming, and I for one am very pleased with how the team has improved as a group this season.
This. The Flames look waaaayyyy better as a team and actually have structure. Hartley system was pond hockey back and forth play so no surprise a lot of players had career years under Hartley but we still sucked. I would rather the forwards have less points but we get more wins and actually play sound defensively.
This team looks like it could play playoff hockey with the best of them and actually win a few series. Not to get ahead of myself but I think our team game is vastly improved and we are a much better team than last year despite our top guys struggling. Once they get going, we will be even stronger.

As of today the Flames are positioned to play the Sharks in Round One of the playoffs, and I am totally okay with that matchup. Every series between these two teams has been hard fought and tight. The Flames match up really well against the Sharks and I like their chances at an upset.
Of course, I still expect that the Flames will overtake the Oilers and end up facing off against the Ducks. I am less comfortable with that matchup.

I don't blame the forwards at all. The defence fell asleep. 10 seconds to go and there is a scrum for the puck.
Both D should be in the neutral zone not asleep in our own zone while we have the pp and the one goal lead. Hamilton is just as culpable as Giordano on that play. He was in the corner in case the puck came up the boards. We didn't need a goal. He should be in the neutral zone making sure nobody gets behind himself and his D partner. Same goes for Gio.
Actually, the weak side D is culpable.

You're a defender, up 3-2 with 10 seconds left, on the power play.
You have one job and one job only, and that job isn't hold the puck in at the offensive blueline, it's defend the lead. When the puck is nowhere near you, it's doubly your job.
Fortunately, the Chad was there all game. I am loving the chad, I wish gaudreau would take some lessons on body language and positive mental outlook from him.
It's not that The Chad seems calm, it's that he seems almost bored. Makes huge saves and the feeling you get watching them is that he has a sly grin on his face the whole time. Like the goalie equivalent of ScoreFaceif such a thing were to exist.

Sort of. Giordano blew that so badly none of the other mistakes matter. Whether tkachuk turns it over or not, whether Hamilton is in deep, there's no way a player should be that open with that much time left in a man advantage situation.
That was a major league pants pooing. All-Star material. If ####ting your pants in public was an Olympic sport Giordano could've medalled tonight if Johnson doesn't make a huge save.

I don't really understand what the Captain was thinking at the end. Was he hoping to get a point shot or something? One of the dumbest moments of the season right there. This team has a lot of young players and you can excuse some of them for mistakes like this but Gio is a veteran player. He really needs to be better than this.
