I dont know about 2 winter tires...I would think that making your traction uneven would have some weird effects, I dont think I'd want to try it.

I did (FWD car with winters in front and A/S in the rear) it when I was younger in school. It's better when accelerating from a stop on slippery roads but not ideal once you get going. I had issues with the rear wheels just giving up traction out of nowhere on slippery roads causing the car to fishtail with no warning.

I did that as well when I was in university with my Celica GT-S. It was a blast. I'd consider doing it again in a heartbeat just for fun. Fishtail around corners, then stomp on it to straighten out.

Tire Rack has an article where they specifically recommend that, if forced to use pairs of different tires, that the better traction pair is always used on the rear axle.

Before front wheel drive became a thing most people only used winter tires on the rear wheels.
