I'm morbidly curious to see what adverse effect (if any) Grossmann has on a team that is actually performing quite well in Stockton.

Haha, that would be something if this was doable with coaches.

I think he is going to do quite well down there. Much more suited to AHL speed at this point in his career. Still a good defenseman with experience, just not able to keep up with the speed of the NHL anymore. Good luck to him!

Plus the fact that Nak was under contract with Carolina by that point.

BT was waiting for Gaudreau to sign first...Johnny signed the day after Nak signed with the Hurricanes.

It's also entirely possible that the Flames were using Nakladal as a stop-gap last year and fully intended to give a spot to a Kulak/Wotherspoon rather than re-sign him.

I'm not sure I understand the Wotherspoon recall? Do they need to be at 8 defenseman to take full advantage of LTIR?

My assumption is that it provides a pairing for the 7th D during practice. Just a guess, though.

I understanding exposing a dman you don´t want to Vegas, but if you do that with Grossman and sign him for next year, the likelyhood of him not being selected and you being stuck with him next season is almost 100%. You would be better off re-signing Engelland at a reduced rate.

Can I get a little clarification about the cap situation?

Grossmann was a 575k contract to reach the ceiling and maximize LTIR. Was this move one that gives us 1.15 mil in cap space? Or just 575k?

Let me explain what I'm thinking/confused about. If BT intended to sign Grossmann to send down, that's just wiping off 575k and a waste of money. But, if he did it to also maximize the LTIR, doesn't that mean he also gets another 575k that would not have been in excess of the cap ceiling for Smid's LTIR, if Grossmann was not on the roster at the beginning of the season?

ie: LTIR allows you to exceed the cap ceiling. Without Grossmann, we can exceed it by 3 mil (3.5 mil - 575k cap space ish for a player) because that's what we "need" per the LTIR calc. With Grossmann, we "need" Smid's full contract value. After waiving him, it's 4 mil extra space to work with (3.5 mil + 575k).

An extra 3 mil space vs 4 mil space at the TDL to work with. Taking advantage of that to get a full mil of cap space seems like a no brainer to me. Especially when some posters went all "OMG" with the contract overages of a couple hundred K due to bonuses.

I am wondering if this is cap flexibility that can be potentially utilized in a TDL trade. Get the space for now, and everything falls into place in future years when this years 1 year deals expire.

LTIR Cap Relief = Cap Hit of LTIR’d Player - (Salary Cap – Current Team Salary Total).

By signing Grossman, we increased the Current Team Salary Total so that the greatest amount of cap space resulted from this formula.

No Grossman:
$3,500,000 [Smid] - ($70,200,000 - $69,625,000) = $2,925,000 cap relief

With Grossman, we basically get the full $3.5M cap relief.

EDIT: Nvm, over thinking it. It's 575k, not amplified to 1.1 mil. Waiving Grossmann just brings us back to status quo prior to signing Grossmann, but allows the lasting effect of extra LTIR maximization.

My understanding now is we essentially traded cash for cap by signing then waiving Grossmann.

Thanks for the clarification.
