It would suck if the GDT didn't have the lineups or any important news in the OP like injuries and stuff like that. I mean sure I can read the entire thread and look for that information but sometimes I just want to know who is playing with who or if someone missed a morning skate and just important news and don't want to read or see 50 score predictions in between.

In regards to the "ownership" of creating GDTs, isn't it better to have a set appointed users create them, instead of multiple threads started at the same time only to have all but one locked? This way the appointed users can have their own spin on how it starts, all the pertinent info is on the first post, and it keeps the front page from being cluttered.

For the people making a big stink about how anybody should be able to make the thread without a proper schedule; if you want to start up a few this season, you probably only need to sign up, otherwise, why are you making a big fuss about something that you're not going to be participating in?

Well that escalated quickly!

I wouldn't be surprised if he stopped doing it due to all the precieved ownership thing and other assumptions made about him.

Why not ask him instead of making assumptions?

I do not read "now's the time" as "now is the time that you will be allowed to start the thread". To me it says that if you have ever considered writing one, now is a time that it would be really helpful to step up.

I'm with you Dion. Sometimes it is good to ask. Or to give someone the benefit of the doubt, especially when they've clearly expended a lot of effort to give us something for nothing in return.
Thanks guys,

Wow, I don't know how people get that impression that I'm some overlord who is talking down to everyone and handing out threads piecemeal like i own them.

Here are the facts everyone, just so we're clear:

1) A couple of years ago HD was still doing every thread, and had been doing so since I had started on this site. That gives me the impression that while there's no official ownership of the GDTs (because of course not), there is a person who sort of has the label of being "that guy". It always seemed like CP was comfortable with that fact.

2) When HD said that he wasn't going to be able to do them anymore, he also asked for others to step up in his absence. What an arrogant prick, right? How dare he claim ownership of the GDTs? :roll eyes:

3) At that point I volunteered to do them. Note this, because it's especially important: NOBODY else even tried to do them, ever. I have never stepped on anyone's toes because nobody ever tried to post a thread before me, or during my entire time doing them.

4) I've never claimed "ownership" over anything, nor would I. However, it seemed to be that I became "that guy" because everyone said so, or at least implied as much. When you do something for a couple of years for nearly every single game, and nobody objects, then you assume that its just become your thing. Note, not something that I own, but rather responsible for. This became especially evident when I would receive several PMs before the start of every season asking if I was continuing in the same role for the next season.

5) The ONLY reason I bothered to start the thread in the first place was to pass off the responsibility. I don't want to be the guy that everyone looks to for all the GDTs, and I never really did want that either. It's just how it worked out. So, in an effort to make this more of a COMMUNITY thing, rather than just my thing, I asked for as many volunteers as possible, the same way that Bingo asked for volunteer writers to do the Game Takes segments last year. I know it's different because he actually DOES own the site, but my point stands.

I posted a similar thread last year and from what I remember the comments were mostly to the effect of "you keep doing them", and "I wouldn't know what to do". So this year I put a few more lines in there to try and spur some hesitant posters into trying it for the first time. Sorry if it came off as any other way because that was clearly not my intention.

I hope this will help people realize that this isn't some authoritarian or ego thing on my part. I like writing them. It sorta became my thing. I wanted the rest of the community to step up and do them. I felt like some sort of organization of it was important, especially if someone wanted to do some in depth writing, mostly because I like reading a preview. That was never a requirement though. I felt like if I didn't put this out there that people would be PMing me constantly about it until I did say something.

So here we are. What I'm surprised by is the reactions of so many who feel like I'm making this about me. That's exactly the opposite of what I'm trying to do here and I deeply regret that so much of this has become about me. I never wanted that and I'm quite embarrassed by all the drama around this. I've said several times over that I don't want to have anything to do with this now if for no other reason than to let the community decide what to do going forward. I hope that makes things crystal clear for everyone, and I really, really want to just move on now.

Thanks.

Thanks CPF. Thanks for the explanation. Most of us don't need it I think as we understood what your intent was. I'm really surprised by the level of snark this brought on. Jesus.

I like the game day threads. I liked when HD did them and I liked when Cali did them. I will never do one. But I enjoyed reading them and appreciated the effort. It is a lot of effort and coordination and I appreciate the time and effort that they and others put into the forum. I have never started a thread and post very little but I would hate the pettiness and insecurities and keyboard commandos on this site cost us, me to not be able to have a well thought out well prepared game day thread over stupid stuff like appointed the, selves and starting threads.

Either be part of the solution or your part of the problem. Cali was right. Sure loss was right. The complaining of a few really hurts this site.

I'll just echo what others are saying and say that I think it is just a few people who are overreacting to an incredibly simple and innocent request.

I think a lot of the people who appreciate the time and effort that goes into the GDTS are still away for summer.
Frankly, the people who have a problem with this thread are the ones being Jr. High-ish: "that guy is actually putting effort into making something good? Guh what a loser." Why is there an issue with Cali asking for help to make his life easier while also putting out a fantastic (and free, you facking batches) thing for CP to enjoy (or not). People getting mad about this, do you bitch out your volunteer firefighters for "claiming ownership" of your community firehall?

Cali, Scorpion, I wouldn't worry to much about what some of the more vocal and negative people are saying. It makes a lot more sense to me to have a group of people who actually care, working together to make something nice, than a shim sham of Internet trolls trying to out post each other. Maybe that's just me though.

Don't know why disagreeing with something lumps one as negative, but whatever works.

I wasn't referring to you personally, MMF. I actually like your (admittedly, dickish) style.

I don't think it's so much an issue with disagreeing, I just don't think it's fair to paint Cali as some type of thanks-whore, when in reality he's providing a free service.

I'd like to add, I don't think any of the people who volunteered did so out of aspirations for CP superstardom. I know for me, it's because I like the GDTS, and CP as a whole, knew that I would be up early on some weekdays, and knew that, regardless if I wrote a GDT, I would be reading about and thinking about the Flames and their opponents on game days. No ulterior motive.

Even if, for example, TheScorpion was just doing it for the "thanks" (which I do not believe), does that change anything? Either he will post a awesome GDT worthy of your precious thanks or it will be mediocre and you can hit it with a drive-by "paging this post is terrible".

Thoroughly enjoy Cali's game day posts. He obviously puts a lot of time and effort into them. It's always nice to have all the relevant information in one post.

Does it matter who starts the thread? No. But it would be nice to get a bit of a schedule together so that people aren't tripping over themselves and wasting time trying to post the same relevant information.

For the record, I do not want to write any GDTs.

But I do call dibs on snarky near-irrelevant posts as well as very lame attempts at humour.
